Could someone just tell me if this is correct?

As far as I understand, you can do the open section of a prelim class without registering either you or the horse, you can get placed/win money and rosettes but not qualify for anything.

Then to enter the restricted sections, you have to register yourself (£30 for the winter season for RC members). Then you can enter restricted section and get qualification points for the Winter Qualifiers. If you do qualify, you then have to register your horse (£30 again for RC members) before competing at the Champs.

Is that correct? And how much higher level/scoring are the open sections to the restricted? Hoping to go out and do one unaffil test in a couple of weeks then just get on wth it and do first BD end of September but won't be registered yet on the RC offer, so will have to do the open section!

Pretty much correct except that the tests you do when completely not registered will still count towards the Petplan qualifiers (different to the Winter/Summer regionals)

There is also absolutely no difference in scoring between the open/restricted sections. The class is run together and O & R riders usually intermingled, the results are given by applicable section though

Great thanks. So if he managed a qualifying Petplan score this september, we'd be able to use that for next year's area festival? Or does it all start again 1st October or something?
Great, thats quite handy so I'd know where I stood amongst the restricted riders even when doing the open.
Prob going to checkendon in Sept!

I'm glad someone has asked about this -I was about to ask the same thing!!

So how does it work with the entries? DO you still complete the entry forms off the BD website - but just mark them as un registered rider and horse?

Or do you need to contact the place that the comp is being held first to see if they will take unregistered competitors?

Am I right in thinking that because I have points at elem. in a previous life that I wouldn't be eligible to go for the area festivals or winter / summer regionals?

Sorry lots more questions!

Urgh, can't get the BD website to work, but iirc you do need to contact BD for a registration number to ride in the open prelim section. You don't have to pay for it. Can't remember what it is called now, but that would go in the horse/rider reg number section on the normal entry form.

The open prelim section does not qualify for regionals anyway. Not sure about petplans. If you were a member and have less than 14 points at Novice or above you could ride in the restricted section I think - they changed the rules to allow a buffer of 14 points before you had to be an Open rider.

It will all be here: http://www.britishdressage.co.uk/competitions/rules if you can get the blooming thing to work!

no, you dont need a registration number to compete in open prelim - used to, but not anymore. i just write unregistered horse on the entry form. any group 7 or 8 rider can ride in restricted prelim as long as they are a member. doesn't matter how many points you have at Novice but if you have more than 14 points at Elem that makes you group 6 and you can only ride in Open Prelim. the open/restricted terminology is confusing at prelim level as the open section is generally lower scoring as it's the non-qualifier, whereas at Novice and above it's the one open to better riders who have more points at higher levels so tends to be higher scoring.

any prelim sheet, open or restricted above 62% qualifies for petplans. to qualify for regionals, you must be group 7 or 8, ride in restricted section so be a member and win 2 of them above 65%.

Oh thanks I'm glad someone asked this as I have just sent my BD membership (riding club offer) and like Emma I'm planning to do some aff prelim / novice over the winter

prelim results don't go on. in fact sometimes novice ones don't if you haven't been placed. don't know why though....
