Well, Kane has been here nearly 2 weeks & it feels as if he's always been here. Can't imagine life without him now! He's really settled into his routine, which is:
First thing - comes to do the horses. He has found an unloved horse jolly ball & can't get enough of it. It's been pristine for 10 years but after a week of his attentions it no longer has a handle & is very much the worse for wear. While I'm riding, he takes it on the school & chases it, dribbles it, pounces on it, shakes it... Quite a lot of exercise for him as he just doesn't stop.
While I'm working, he goes to sleep next to me & has got less clingy. I can now make a cup of tea without him following & he sometimes wanders upstairs by himself for a change of scene.
Lunchtime - we go out & have a good play with the kong dumb bell in the yard.
Evening - he comes to do the horses which means another play session with the kong or the jolly ball.
Also in the evening, I've started basic training with him using an obedience book that my parents used for their collies. I do 5 or 10 mins max so it's fun. So far we've done recall, sit in front, sit-stay & gradually increasing the time, sit at my side & tonight we started 'stand'. I've also enquired about doing training classes with him. Somewhere nearby has a proper academy where we could work towards obedience awards, agility, & even guard dog training certificates!!
He has been to the grooming parlour & had a good bath & his claws trimmed. He had quite an oily coat & I thought that was what it was s'posed to be like, but now he's all fluffy & not greasy at all. He smells far less strong. I've also got him a brush.
I'm gradually swapping his food from Wagg to Burns & his poo has improved. He now has a kong stuff-a-ball as you can see from the photos! He has also stopped barking at o/h & will play games nicely with him.
The clipping lady who lives nearby takes him out twice a day if I've got a day of meetings & he's fine with her. She really likes him & can't understand why he was abandoned. In fact, he's fine with everyone - parents, postman etc. No barking or growling.
I've also got a dyson animal, a new mop & bucket & a special dry mop thing for the laminate...
Can I just say thank you to everyone on here for being supportive of Kane & I & for *not* saying, 'OMG, are you completely mad, having a large rescue rottie as your first dog? Send him back, crazy lady'.
Photos - some are blurry cos o/h's phone is too slow to keep up with him when he's on the case with his stuff-a-ball!!!
