Would it be detrimental to feed a horse who isnt prone to laminitis, but gains weight very easily, something like happy hoof(or something designed for lami's)?

I only ask as my boy looks at food and puts weight on.. He is out at night and in during the day.. he is out on not much grass, and has his hay double netted during the day. And his feed is tiny, but he is still fat (imo).

I was thinking of putting him on something like this... http://www.allenandpage.com/Products/Rest-and-Light-Work/Slim-and-Healthy.aspx but not sure on chaff... hmm.. any ideas welcome!

I'm sure there's nothing wrong with feeding it and possibly better for them anyway as the feeds for laminitic ponies are just very low in sugars I think. I could be wrong though so don't quote me on that but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't do him any harm.

Does he need any feed if he is fat and has enough energy?! I would give him a handful of fast fibre and a vit and min supplement :) My mare is prone to being a bit porky, and is on Winergy low and looks a fab weight, with enough energy :)

If he's on a restricted diet then I'd suggest a low calorie balancer. My good doers are on Top Spec Anti Lam and Top Chop Lite chaff.

I wouldnt have thought so at all - in fact its probably ideal for him.

I do exactly this but use TopSpec topchop lite as its unmollassed and my mare is barefoot so the less sugar the better. I know a lot of people think its quite expensive but its stocked at my local supplier rather than having to be ordered in, there are however some other unmollassed chaffs such as Simple systems. Also hiflite, dengie do gooder.

If you dont feed the recommended amount you should probably feed a vit / min supplement as well though with those. Also some people like Fast Fibre if they dont like chaff (to bulk feeds out / slow feeding rate)

Thats the thing KatB, when he doesnt get enough from his feed, he does lack energy. Otherwise he cirtainly wouldnt be fed :p Hes on Hi-Fi lite and pasture mix (although only a tiny bit of each! Literally his whole feed is a handful) And a little bit (about half of what is reccomended for his weight) of Propel Plus, along with garlic, salt, biotin, and carrots - cause mum insists he has them! :p

But i think it needs changing.. hmmm
