Sage is home but not a happy puppy! Apparently ahe managed to remove some of the staples during the night despite having a buster collar on. So she now has an even bigger collar on and hates it.
Also she isn't really weightbearing on her leg which I am hoping is due to her fiddling with it and making it sore.
Anyhoo question is how did your dogs cope with wearing a buster collar? Do they get used to it? Is there anything I can do to make life more bearable for her?

My sympathies:( my girl never needed a collar she never attempted to bother the op site, is she trying to paw it off or jsut down in the dumps?
There are a few different types that the vet wont stock, it may be worth googling and looking for something a little more user friendly, I had a buster collar on Thomas the puppy lurcher before he went as she had to have the end of his tail chopped, he was fine with it on, but I had to put a humungus one on him, as he could reach the wound, I just took it off until he was left alone then popped it on.
Is she not weight bearing at all?
 
Ps, IME they do always get used to things, I thinks thats why I maybe crate train quicker than usual, I dont give in, esp when u have little choice and they need to get used to whatever it is, in her case to stop her undoing suck crucial surgery, I never pander and think "oh, I feel bad I have to let them out or take whatever away" I let it ride, I know what I need to gain and how it will benefit the dog,.
Hang in there, and when u have the hood off when u are supervising, be firm when telling her to leave it alone:D
 
Thanks for the reply Cayla. No she isn't trying to get it off but looks really miserable and sort crys quietly. I'm fairly sure she isn't in too much pain (other than you would expect) just hates the collar. The vet said to have staples removed after 14 days but I'm aiming for 10 if she has this monstrosity on!! Like you I was lucky with Dex as he didn't bother at all.
As for the leg she's kind of putting the toe down but hoppy if you know what I mean.
She's on ABs in case she's infected it so I'll see how she goes over the next day or so. Off to google buster collars thanks for the tip. J x
 
Ah, I see it's a "she looks miserable" thing:p in that case im an unsympathetic mummy and the collar stays:eek::D unless im there then it can come off, my girl could weight bear bt she certainly could not put feull weight on the paw, more her toes, but she did not hop or keep the foot off the ground at all, I did rest her to within an inch of her life, she was crated (this made her miserable) but she never fussed, jsut looked sick as a chip, I will have to find the picci of her in it:rolleyes: I literally let her out for a wee and pooh and then back to crate.
Lest not forget, rotts are good at looking sad:rolleyes::D
 
Oh yes they have that seal pup look down to a fine art!! I daren't take it off at all just in case she has a go while my attention is elsewhere. Dexter is also quite interested in her wound!! Typical he didn't bother with his own at all.
Have found an inflatable one online so may order that and see if it's easier for her.
If nothing else it may save my house from a bashing!!

Dexter was pretty good with both of his almost frpom day 1 which is why I am a bit concerned with her lameness. But then again they wouldn't have let her home if they thought there was a problem so I'll just keep an eye on her for a while.
Think I'm just being a paranoid Mummy. :rolleyes:
 
They can vary a little in the way they go, my boss did explain to be, some snap and some rupture, some go slowly and some at a moment, my girls ruptured whilst doing a nifty turn in the field at speed, she will no doubt still feel sore and the hood does have them a little confused as to what the heck it is:rolleyes: hence giving them a puzzled look on their face too.
You could also very loosy place a lady towel, ok then a (fanny pad):D over the op site when the hood is off see if that would stop her paying interest in it or dexter from trying to sniff and lick:D it's not a dressing as such, just a temp cover for less exposure.
 
When my old girl had some lumps removed a couple of months ago she seriously freaked out in the buster collar. I got her one of the inflatable collars (like a tyre inner tube), and it she accepted it very well. Only draw back with a hind leg is that Sage might still be able to turn round and get at it as the collar isn't so restrictive.

ETS. Mine is a size 4, large dog.
 
When Charlie had to wear a collar after an accident, he hated it! I would have done the tough love bit though, but he is a big dog and the collar he had to wear was so big he couldn't drink or even get up the stairs with it on so I couldn't leave it on him for long, and only if I had to go out for a short while. What I did do was make use of all those odd socks that we always accumulate, put it over the leg and use medical tape (lots of it!) to secure it on. He sometimes used to get the sock off but I would put the collar on after he did it so he soon understood that if he didn't want the nasty collar on he'd better leave the sock alone. Then I would leave the sock off as long as I was around. Hope this rambling is of some help!
 
Thanks for the offer MM and the link CC. I found that collar when I googled earlier. I agree with you MM that she will still be able to reach it with that kind of collar, but your kind offer is much appreciated.
She is getting better with it already and is currently eyeing Mishka up so must be feeling happier. Also she is walking on the leg better so I think I just have a mardy madam. She has only ever had surgery once before and that was a spay. When I think that we may have 2 more legs to go my blood runs cold!!
TS I was thinking of putting a tubigrip on it and seeing how we go with that.

KH PMSL at the thought of your dog in shorts!! :D Sages wound is on her knee and down so, apart from making a slightly doubtful fashion statement, don't think it would work.
