Hello. Due to be picking up my lorry this weekend. As it's been in build for rather a long time (thanks Dad :D) it's not currently taxed. Just been MOT'd, but the certificate is with Dad, 150 miles north. Haven't sorted insurance yet, am hoping to do that tomorrow. So can I tax a 7.5T online or does it have to be done at a post office? And assuming it can be done online, if it hasn't arrived by the time I head up north to collect it, does anyone know if I can drive it home without it, as technically it's taxed?

Flipping logistics

You can do online but only if insurance and plate is up to date (don't know how long the systems take to update after you insure). Technically the tax must be displayed so you shouldn't drive it without it even if technically taxed.

Yes you can do online and it comes in a couple of days.
As SJ says though not sure how that would work if not insured yet as I think it checks an online database in someway so would have no idea how long it takes to update

Thanks measles - horsey colleague also thought theirs was done online. I've not had my lorry for so long that online taxing wasn't possible back then! Dad seems to think you can't do it online, he's not normally wrong about these types of things but does seem like he might be out of date on this. But then his OH has a lorry so I'm sure they'd know

Might need to check if the local PO up north is open on a Saturday morning so I can collect the MOT to get it taxed. Oh but then I might not have a paper copy of the insurance by then

Oh loads of cross posts. Right good to know I can do online, I think the insurance part is relatively instantaneous but will ask that. Just maybe need to hope I can get it posted to me in time, but yes I remember studying a case at Uni whereby someone's tax disc had fallen on the floor and they were done for it; but I did think that had changed since the days of online taxing.

I don't think you can tax it online if the tax has lapsed - you have to do it at a VOSA office, not a post office. I had to do mine that way at the start of the year, luckily I work next to a VOSA office as there aren't many of them around.

Might have changed though. You can tax it online if there is no gap between discs

Santa that's ok as I am the registered keeper. Dad's been doing the work so I trusted him not to pinch it ;)

Diesel that is very useful to know, perhaps that's the issue. It's been off the road for 2 years so definitely not consecutive. There is a VOSA office near me but the flipping MOT certificate isn't so no idea how I'm going to work this!!

Haha I'm even more confused now! I have at least found the booklet that came with the registration document, and that confirms I would not have to display the tax disc within the first 5 days of the month IF the vehicle was already taxed. As it's not, I guess I have to have the tax disc physically displayed, so I'll have to get it in my grubby paws before I collect the lorry.

Still no clearer on whether I can do it online. Guess I'll sort the insurance tomorrow and take it from there.

Thanks everyone - why is nothing ever simple

The insurance database takes 24 hours to update.

Several times I haven't been able to tax or sorn our horseboxes online. Usually because of "a change in taxation class" (which maybe the case if it was a commercial vehicle and is now for private use) or when they are updating the vehicle details or their system.

Unfortunately you can't tax anything over 3.5t at a post office (unless the clerk is clueless ;) ) so if you can't do it online you have to go to a DVLA local office.

You can only tax online if you have a v11 reminder form, if you are applying to tax again then you need to go to a dvla office (i tax trucks as a job!)

Do you only tax commercial LGVs ?

Is taxing private LGVs different from commercial?

What happens when all the DVLA offices are shut down?

I had to go in and do mine in the DVLA office (the london one is based in borehamwood!), firstly because the ownership was still in the old owners name and then because they had sent my reminder to the wrong address and I didn't have it.

Am waiting for this year's reminder so let's see what happens and if I get to do it online.

I tax fleets of hgvs, lgvs and company cars. Can only go to the dvla aa currently cannot tax without a v11 reminder,
When the dvla offices shut in 2013/4 they will have to change their website or we will have to use the post office.

just called DVLS TAX section on 0300 123 4321 select option 4 then option 3 to speak to an adviser

They could not give me specifics because I would need the documentation but stated that if the ASKMID data base has been updated with the insurance and it has a current MOT then there should be no problem doing it online in which you get 5 days to legally drive it without displaying the disc

If there is a problem online then going to a PO is the way to do it but you will need to produce MOT, insurance cert (printed off PC is fine) and the V5 document at the counter

Wow thanks everyone and to Rog for doing that! Why is nothing ever simple?

Does anyone know if all DVLA test stations are computerised? Apparently the MOT cert is hand written, does this mean it's not going to be in the database? It's Aberdeen if that makes a difference.

Well insurance now live on MID but I wasn't able to tax online. This is the message I got:

Unfortunately, because of the tax class of the vehicle or recent changes to the vehicle record, you are currently unable to apply for a tax disc or declare SORN using this service.

You will need to apply for the tax disc or declare SORN at a licence-issuing Post Office® or DVLA Local Office (as applicable for the vehicle) using the reminder (Vehicle Licence Application/SORN Declaration) or the Registration Document/Certificate together with the Insurance Certificate or Cover Note, MOT Test Certificate/GVT Test Certificate (if applicable) and fee.

....which still doesn't entirely clarify, as I'm none the wiser as to whether I have to go to DVLA or not. As it happens DVLA is nearer my office than a post office, so I'll go there, assuming I get the MOT in time (certificate is on it's way in the post from up north).

Tax class as per the V5C says HGV, which is entirely confusing me. I though HGV didn't even exist anymore and had been replaced by Large Goods vehicle class x . And as it's a 7.5T it's not "large"? I've not been paying attention recently though so will go off and google!

(Oh just did, wikipedia was maybe not the best source, I'm even more confused :D).

Anyway I will update once I've been to the DVLA so you can all sleep at night :p

Ah ok. Have found out (assume most of you knew this!) that "HGV" in DVLA parlance means any vehicle over 3.5T. Apparently I need to fill in a form V85. That confirms I need to do this at a DVLA office, as sbw said.

Link - just so I can find it tomorrow to print off!

I'm still not sure if I'll be able to do it online in future, but as many of you seem to, the issue must be the lack of continuity of tax rather than just the size/tax class etc?

Clear as mud? :o

It's the gap that causes the diff 4legs..I did a months sorn on mine as tax became due a few days after I'd given.birth...big mistake! Had.to go.to.a.dvla.post.office &.as.then.couldn't.find my original.proof.of owner.form.whatever.its.called..ie just.had renewal.bit..had.to.buy a new one.which.wasn't.cheap...excuse full.stops......cracked.screen :(

Sorry the disc bit, i believe the failure to display is no longer an offence, as long as you have the printed receipt of taxing.

It is still an offence not to display a current excise license, but since the introduction of taxing online, we give 7 days for the new discs to arrive. I can't say that would be the same with all police forces though!!
