So I decided to take my youngster for her first drag hunt yesterday....

We made it exactly 100 yards into the first canter when she bolted, screamed to a halt put her head between her knees bronced till i was off and took off after the main field (we were in the novice section behind) ... they caught her eventually, the whole field had to be stopped including the hounds!

She has done this before when over excited and have had all tack, back teeth checked etc in case anyone is panicking!

I could still see the trailer from where i lay in the mud!

Mercifully she is ok, just a few cuts where she leapt a barbed wire fence!! I feel like i have been hit by a bus today! Took her back to the trailer and spent 2 hours in the rain waiting for the rest of the field to come back!

Is this the quickest and most embarrassing hunt fall ever? I know i was humiliated!! You could literally hear everyone thinking 'blooming beginners'!!!!

Were you out with the Sandhurst? I was on foot and heard someone mention it at the end of the first line. How annoying! I'm sure no-one thought that, it happens to us all.......my pony decided to sit on me at a sponsored ride last week!!

Hope you are feeling better soon......lots of arnica!!! We'll be out in two weeks if you fancy braving it again!

Poor you! Hope you're not too sore. Not sure if this will help but if you take her again prehaps try really warming her up well before the hunt set off (I know they can often go from walk to canter straight away!), do some cantering with her to get her listening to you, then hopefully she'll be less inclined to bolt and buck you off once they start!

Also maybe try some things a bit less exciting than hunting, like sponsored rides, endurance pleasure rides etc, to get her used to being out with lots of other horses and hopefully calm her down?

You have my total sympathy as my 7 yo still broncs out of sheer excitement on the first canter on fun/hunt rides or even fast hacks. So far she hasn't had me off but near enough and I know how humiliating I will find it the day she does!

Yes it was with Sandhurst and that was me!! Mortified!! I was so looking forward to it but as soon as i got back on her she started doing it again and having fractured my elbow three weeks previously I didnt fancy her losing it again further round the field.. at least I didnt have a long walk back to the trailer!!

Definitely going to try again but on someone elses pony (the coloured cob who behaved immaculately!) bless his owner has said I can use him next time so I can at least get out of the car park!! So kind of them!

I think i am going to leave hunting with her this year - she is only 5 and hopefully will be a bit maturer next year! We have done some sponsored rides etc and will try a few more of them.. at 17.1 IDxWB she is quite a lot of horse to hold!!

Probably see you in a couple of weeks, if you see a coloured cob and an anxious looking rider its me!!
smile.gif

I think I spoke to the cob's owner.......her daughter was riding I think. If that is the one, he was really well behaved. We'll be going out regularly from two weeks time so look out for the one-eyed bay pony!!

You have my sympathy.

I have a friend whos gelding broncs with excitement and he's 12. I went to a couple of fun rides with her recently and we discovered that my boy reverses at high speed when over excited (never done it before). So at the first fast canter of the first ride we did, she went up and down and I went backwards, right into the group following.

I knew exactly what they were thinking

You have all my sympathy, my 'hunter' either was bolting down the main drive of country houses or standing on two legs waving at the Queen.....I stuck to sponsored rides after a while and he was great, still racy but just about containable!

Also drag hunting is quick I think, point and shoot stuff, maybe go autumn hunting with a slower pack if you can find one once you have had some fun with the coblet? quite a lot of standing around then?

You have my sympathy...

I once came off in the carpark before we had even started. My little horse reared out of the blue while I had my reins by the buckle, a mince pie in one hand and a drink in the other. I just slid off

I wish I could take my badly behaved horse out with your less than perfectly behaved horses, I wouldn't be nearly as worried about making a scene

someone i know went cubbing recently for the first time, her 'nanny' abandoned her at the meet (nice, really responsible thing to do) and as they moved off her horse went nuts and reared over backwards onto her, then galloped off home (a few miles.) she was very bruised and a bit squashed but okay... horse was fine.
not sure whether this could have been quicker than yours, but equally = zero fun.

I went hunting for the first time ever 2 weeks ago, obviously it was a genius idea to lose my hunting virginity as it were by taking a point to pointer who hasn't been so far this season. Although you get the award for the quickest fall out hunting I managed to fall off twice (landing on my feet and keeping hold of the horse both times) and spend a lot of time with a very sweaty horse going backwards, sideways and all the rest of it (fortunately a friend of mine was on his nutty TB and we stayed out of the way together). I was chatting to someone the other day and apparently it was the talk of the local pub on "pie night" last week - how embarassing especially since I've only just moved to the area!

Glad you are feeling better today.

Yes, you can get the easy ride on ben next time and we will see how French handles the excitement !!!!!!!!!! Maybe I should wait with the trailer.

Oh don't worry, I've known several people who have fallen off at the meet

A long time ago when I used to qualify P-to-P'ers, there was one in particular that used to dump me at least 3 times in a day - we used to get a lot of police out in those days cos of the antis, and they got very good at catching him for me and bringing him back (and giving me leg-ups as he was quite tall!)
grin.gif

The masters would be lined up to sign my card just to get rid of me early

I did see a big Iron Grey Beastie hurtle past and leap a headland ,complete with barb wire fence. Looked like he cleared it to me.My reaction incidentally was Gawd, thats a fiery beast ,I am glad I,m not on it.

Sorry about her behaviour Mike!! As you will see from my previous string I didnt make it 100ms!!! Gutted to miss it especially as having just watched your vid which is great!! See you in a couple of weeks without my big baby girl!! I think she and i need a little more control until we try and hunt again
smile.gif

Oh dear, hope your feeling better to today.

Please don't feel embarrassed though, it can happen to the best of us and the worst of us, all young horses have to get out there and start somewhere and you never know how they are going to take to it, some get over excited and buck, others just tank off and you have no breaks, despite how well behaved they normally are when riding on in group hacks, just one of those things...suck it and see etc.

Perhaps eventually when you horse finds it a little less exciting then hopefully he'll settle down more and not buck in the future, not nice though when you turned up and only end up having 5 minutes in the saddle but your not the first and certainly won't be the last.

I once fell off before I even got to the meet! Was hacking there and went under a low branch which turned out to be lower than I thought and knocked me off backwards!

I am so glad mine isn't the only horse that behaves like this!

My "experienced hunter" either tanks off with no brakes (didn't take him in that bit again
smirk.gif
) or, when he realises I have control, runs backwards... two weeks ago we ran backwards into a hedge, into a barbed wire fence, into a ditch and into the rest of the field... They keep telling me to "keep bringing him, he will settle" but I'm not sure they really mean it...
crazy.gif

Last chance saloon for mine this weekend! We're autumn hunting on saturday and I'm hoping he'll have settled a bit, as it'll be the 3rd or 4th of the season so far for us. Fingers crossed!

oh, that was yours? lol! i was up the front and the loose horse shout went up so we came to a halt for a bit and then suddenly this horse came bounding up to us and nearly went through another barbed wire fence. luckily as half the field were still on that side of the fence it stopped and got taken back. no-one uttered anything other than asking how the rider was. there's no mick-taking (well only a bit once you get to know them - they ribbed me enough the number of times i fell off last season!) hope you're bruises go away soon.

I sympathise but how big is she and how big are you?? Could well be that you are over-horsed notwithstanding that she is a baby?

Eh? The lass fell off. Horse bu**ered off, was caught and returned....end of! Hardly crime of the bloomin century!
1st time out nobody can know how their horse will behave.
And since when did size have anything to do with being over horsed?
My 13 yr old copes wonderfully with her 14.1hh but has her hands full with a stroppy 25 yr old 11.2hh. Size is not always everything
smirk.gif

She is BIG! IDxWB and 17.1 plus but no I dont think i am overhorsed at all, thanks for the suggestion though. She was just super excited thats all, bless her we have been concentrating on dressage and then all of a sudden she has open fields and galloping people all about! I was excited too! I believe its all about education and experience, and we will be going back... maybe not together initially but sod it I know we will both love it eventually - as long as we can get out of the carpark
