Last night I went to a local riding school to watch my friends kid have a lesson.

One of the ponies being used looked very familiar to me and I realised it was a pony I had on loan a good 12/13 years ago!

I absolutely adored this pony. I had him from when he was 4 till he was 6 and I was forced to give him pony up when we moved and the lady who owned him did not want him to move with me. I was heartbroken for a long time afterwards and to this day think about him frequently.

The sight of him being riden round by this kid who was pony club kicking him pretty much for the whole lesson while the instructor shouted 'smack him with your whip. Hes being lazy' very nearly moved me to tears. It was a world away from the forward going, amazing young pony that I knew.

Afterwards I went and found him and gave him a big cuddle (I did cry at this point)

It brought back so many memories, both happy and painful.

No real point to this post and I realise how wet I sound! Just needed to vent.

Thanks

Not daft...perfectly understandable! If we came across the pony we used to have I think we'd offer to buy him and have him out of there as quick as possible!!
Can only imagine how it was seeing him :( we've been looking for our first pony for ages now :(

I remember once something similar happened to me. I saw my first pony in a local riding school (she looked really happy). The yard owner was a right jack the lass and when I asked about the pony she gave this long story about how she had been her whole life with another pony and they were inseparable and lots of other completely fictional bunkum too. I just smiled and calmly told her how that was news to me having owned her for more than seven years.

Yes, I find the idea of riding schools that the horses are lazy is ridiculous, they are hard working and generally quiet types, I hate all this hitting them, I have even seen one been hit down the flank with a light (thin) schooling whip, in that sensitive area in front of hind leg, I protested, but was over-ruled, told the pony need it as it was lazy, it had worked all day and now was doing three or four jumping rounds with different riders. So much for welfare and a caring attitude. Another horse on loan (all livery costs paid by owner) was hit with a lunging whip by the instructor, is this what the BHS encourage? It makes me scream.
