just wondered what i can expect to do as i am aiming to do some work experience at a couple racing yards-one this month and another in summer before i apply to racing school. wont be looking to ride as never ridden a thoroughbred before but any idea what i will be doing otherwise ?

If you don't want to ride a TB on work experience, and to be fair very few yards let the work expo's ride anyway, then why on earth do you want to go to the racing school?!? If you want a career in racing you need guts, you need to be able to get on pretty much anything and cope with it. I'm sorry but if you don't want to ride on work expo then racing really isn't for you.

i did not say i did not want to ride the horses , i just assumed that as a work experience person i wouldn't be allowed to ride them, which is pretty much what you just said yourself EKW.

Basically mucking out I imagine for work experience.

I know a few people who are at the BRS and are really enjoying it :)

hmm thats positive; i've heard from everyone how hard the work is!
no doubt about that though, at least if you're doing what you like i spose you'd enjoy it :D

just fingers crossed i'll do well when I apply

It is definately hard work especially with all the fitness work they seem to be doing! The horses seem lovely though :D Good luck!

Many apologies but

to me suggests that you don't want to ride a TB and that you are apprehensive about doing so.

Sorry if I am being abrupt but I have had to deal with so many work expo's that really shouldn't have been let off of the lead rein at the riding school and some that would be scared of looking at a budgie in a cage that I dread it everytime one crops up in the yard.

Lots of mucking out. Learn to tolerate swearing too. Most important skill is to be able to not flinch at the f word!

Don't forget the nigh on 10,000 new swear words you will learn with every inflection, accent and tone of voice! In a 1000 word conversation expect 950 of them to be swear words. I swear worse that a ship full of pirates that have been refused shore leave whilst they are anchored 10metres away from a brothel! It's safe to say the racing lingo and quite colourful :D

My irish head lad knew swear words I had never heard and I swear plenty mtself. Its amazing.

He called our horses yaaa little bollix when they were idiots and I liked it so much I kept using it

Ours are called - horrible little scab or a disease when they are being total pain in the backsides! But on the flip side none of ours are horses, they get called ponies despite the fact that we only have a handful of 15.2hh's, the rest are much bigger lol!

You don't necessarily have to fall off, you ust have to be good at curling your shoulder and rolling when you do so you don't injure yourself so you can get back on, finish the work and then get on the next one. In 6 years I have fallen off 7 times and only two of them I would class as proper falls. One when the horse bolted, tried to turn a corner on the road and slipped over with me underneath him - that was in the first 6 months, the other was only a few weeks ago when the horse was far too fresh for his own good and bronced down the road. I sat for 15-16 of them - on the road, on the grass, on the road, on the grass, into the hedge, out of the hedge, on the grass then splat lol! But never have I been seriously hurt.

My moto is - I'm not scared of falling off, I'm scared I'll hurt the ground!

numpty question: did you perfect your technique every time you took a flier ? :D

although i've heard as a latest thing to the racing school they're teaching you how to fall off correctly but that might just be the jocks
