Rain Ranting Thread

Well the wind here on the west coast where we are doesn't seem as bad as forecast raining but not torrential however it must have rained heavily overnight as everywhere is running water though no flooding.I have never seen as much water running off the fields .Drains seem to be coping and no lying water on the fields but got absolutely soaked doing the horses and taking the dogs out first thing.
Same old weather!!!

I can't decide which ones to get, do you find one better than the other?
Are different. WF bigger, best to only lay on pretty flat / levelled ground else warp. (V v soft might be ok). WF have built in grip.

MC more adjustable / smaller pieces. Can lay on pretty much any situation. Let more grass grow through. Can be slippery. Though ok if ground flat snd cover old hay / bedding. Most of my MC mats grass and plants have growth through. Needing to offset long paths feels wasteful (else mats split apart in middle.

WF racing are easy to do long paths with.

Both companies nice to deal with.

Both about same price inc postage / square metre.

WF racing 10 year guarantee against breaking if lay per instructions (not on unlevel ground)

MC 20 year guarantee snd can lay on any ground.

Surprisingly calm and quiet here at present. Getting the dogs out a couple of times before the storm hits .Luckily have an indoor sand school so we can take them out in there for a run around when it gets bad ( small agility course and area to dig available in there for them ).
Have added extra bedding to the pole barn and will put more haylege out lunchtime. it's open to the fields and it's good grazing so will leave it open and the horses can go out of they want.
Just hope all the trees are ok and we keep power since the storm of 87 strong winds have always spooked me we were without power for 10 days and cut off for vehicles 3 days.
Stay safe everyone.

I feel like we need a "No Rain Ranting Thread" at this point. Can't imagine many farmers will be getting a second cut of hay in this year at this rate. My fields crunch when I walk across them. Remembering the days when grass was green and not yellow.

We have had a fair few good showers over the last week, all the lovely flat dry ground has gone slippy and muddy, can't bloomin win.
The farmer who cut my hay (mid june) asked if he could take a cut of silage off the field IF it grew enough so there is still hope
We've had a couple of showers too but not enough to really make the ground damp. It's dried off and back to how it was within a couple of hours, like it hasn't rained. Nightmare.

I was at a RDA fundraising event on Saturday. It was showery in the morning and the rain got heavier as the day went on, to the point that we cancelled the last hour and cleared up early. The rain was still bouncing as I drove away about 4.00pm On Tuesday, I was back at the farm and the ground was back to being dusty. You really wouldn't guess that we had so much rain at the weekend.

We've been the same :( Our fields and lawn might be slightly less brown but there's still no grass growing on any of the fields.

Very envious of those that have had rain and hoping it might mean some farmers are able to take a second cut 🤞

Yes, exactly how it has been here. It's absolutely poured down at some points but no evidence of it after a couple of hours. We need a good solid week of it I think to actually do anything but looking at the forecast, there is nothing now for another 2 weeks and 25 degrees. I haven't stopped feeding hay since winter.

I can't complain about the lovely summer weather we have been having though, it's been a long time since we've had it for this long that I can remember but it would be good to have a little bit of balance!

We've had a few days with heavy rain. While the top looks dry you can almost hear the grass growing.
Same here, the difference between the top paddock (that they are on) and the bottom one (that they are NOT on*) is quite pronounced. Bottom is bright green.

*but broke into because while topping the farmer obliterated the earth stake of my energiser

We had heavy rain in the early hours but the ground is still rock solid and my resting fields are still asleep.

My hay farmer said he rarely bothers with a second cut of hay because it isn't as nutritious and the weather rarely plays ball in terms of keeping it dry. I'm more than happy to have the lower nutrition stuff but I think stocks are going to be low around here.

Hoping for a benign winter so it'll probably be beast from the east or needing an arc

grass is going mad again here - I’ve stopped putting hay out for my mare who has a fairly big field but is restricted as in there is limited grass in her field. It’s gone from yellow to green in about two days and they are all eating noticeably less hay when they are in.

We've cut a load of hay here - it's not usually worth it, but the yield has been spectacular. And the grass is coming back through like mad. We've had a lot of rain and warm weather.

Mind you, I'm part of a team running a big camping event in Wales in a couple of weeks and I don't know whether to plan for hot weather or torrential downpours! It'll probably snow, just to catch us out!
