Hi All,

A bit of an odd one but my horse has a swollen vein on the right side of his face. It happened last year sometime and just went down on it's own after a couple of days.

I'm inclined to just give it a couple of days again but with it being bank holiday don't really want to be stuck with an emergency call out fee if i can help it!

I will of course call the vet if it looks any worse when i go and check on him after work but i was just wondering if any of you had come across this before? It seems to be tender when touched but apart from that he is fine in himself, bright, breathing normally, grazing, drinking, pooing etc

The midges are particularly bad at the minute but i can't see or feel a bite anywhere near it (same as last time it happened)

Anybody seen this before?

It sounds like his parotid gland which is also called grass gland. This commonly happens with mine when we get a big spout of new fresh grass. If the swelling is located just behind his jaw where the throatlash sits it will be his grass glands and there is nothing to be concerned about! You may find he may be uncomfortable coming round onto the bit if it is very swollen.

Hmm, i don't think it's his grass glands in that case as it's like a wiggly line across his cheek.

I have text the photos to my vet and have been advised to just keep an eye on it for a few days and have them out to look at him if it doesn't go down or gets any bigger :)

I know of one horse that essentially had a varicose vein on his side, unsightly but unproblematic. If this has happened before but not permanent I wonder if it has some damage that usually doesn't matter but if something else crops up like banging head in the wrong spot it flares up?
