Rat bite (ME!)

Seems to me like you shouldn't have posted on here asking for advice, you obviously don't want to take it.

Agree with QB...Not intending to sound rude at all, but just puzzled as to why ask for advice or suggestions if the majority view is then ignored. Waste of everyone's time replying...(and my time writing this!)

go th A and E NOW and tell them been bitten by rat concerned about leptospirosis/ weils desease. If you dont go this can kill you in a matter of a few days. if this was done 5-7 days later it may already be a lot later than it should be.

I'd have been at A&E yesterday. I hope you're there now, hence no replies!

I got caught by a dog going for a ball a few months ago and I was straight there for a proper clean out and jabs, and dogs don't carry half the diseases than rats do.

I'd bet my bottom dollar that if it had been a horse who'd been bitten and a week later was suddenly very tender you'd have had the vet out already.....

you have left the cat to finish it off it would have been a kinder death to the rat than suffering in the brambles let this be a lesson learnt to interfere with nature.

Allow me to tell you a story...my dog was bitten by a rat. Similiar to you no break in the skin. Infection set in even though he was at vets within hours. We got the infection under control yet a week later he went rapidly downhill. Eventually his kidneys and organs came under too much pressure and he was put on dialysis but it didn't work and he had to be put to sleep. Point of my story...my dog died from a rat bite despite antibiotics within 3-4 hours of the incident. There was only that delay as he didn't show any pain/symptoms and it wasn't till his leg was shaved we saw the same little marks you are seeing. GO TO A BLOODY DOCTOR NOW! Alternatively hang tough and wait till your kidneys start to fail from leptospirosis

a few years ago my friends healthy fit middle aged mother died from leptospirosis after just being scratched by a rat she was freeing rom her bird feeder. She had flu like symptoms before getting pneumonia and kidney failure, doctors were baffled before the post mortem :(
NOT scaremongering, just trying to explain how serious this might become

Should I be doing anything? Bloody yard cat - yet again - was enjoying torturing a poor rodent to death and at first glance I thought a big vole. It was still alive and my usual course of action is to carefully cup a hand over the rodent, pick it up and gently lob it into the brambles where it can either die in peace or recover and scuttle away. As I bent to rescue this rodent, my brain registered that the proportions were wrong for a vole, the head was too big for the body, as in a young animal. In the split second before I closed my hand round the rodent I realised it was a young rat. Too late, I'd picked it up and it had enough energy to bite me on the tip of one finger. I dropped it pdq onto the concrete - as if it wasn't hurt enough - then picked it up by its tail and lobbed it into the brambles. I checked my finger but couldn't see any blood. It did dawn on me that it might need attention but there really was nothing to see. It's now 5 - 7 days later and with no warning at all the tip of my bitten finger has started to hurt like stink. Feels as though there is a needle buried under the skin so that the lightest touch makes me jump. I can just make out the 2 hyphen-sized bite marks. Not feverish, no rash on hands or feet. Up to date with tetanus. No cravings for cheese, ha ha. Can't see the point of going to GP. Anything sensible I should do???

Why ask for advice if you just ignore everyone? you should go to a and e.

Dear Box of Frogs - you were very kind, helpful and gave lots of excellent advice when I was looking for information as to liver problems with one of our horses. I think you should get this seen to asap - better safe than sorry! I know it's tempting to hope these things will sort themselves out, especially if you are not keen on doctors/hospitals! However don't risk it. x

Eeee Mrs, what on earth have you been up to eh?
Ratties (the wild variety) are minging little beasties and a bite should never be taken lightly. You ought to have covered yourself with a course of antibiotics at the time, but its never too late! Go and see the OOH's doctor and get it seen to. If he feels it needs a trip to a and e, thats where you will be promptly booted!
If that had been one of the neds you would have had the vet out pronto to have a look-see!

Rather a sanctimonious post! (Scratch that - a VERY sanctimonious post!)

BofF - hope you've managed to see a Doc and if you haven't please do...

Meanwhile, if Shils wants some entertainment, I vote Shils bites a rat and we see what happens to it...:D:p

I don't bite rats. I swallow them whole.
And stop ruining my plans for future threadscomplete with pics of BofF's gradually gangrenous limbs departing from her septicaemia ridden body - there's nothing on TV!

TBH, I would have left the yard cat do it's job!

Re: shils' post, it is OP who said that she wanted to let it go and see how things panned out, Shils was just saying that if that was what OP wanted, please keep us informed, we can follow the progress and learn from other peoples mistakes.

Oh, I wasn't planning on any 'learning' - merely to satisfy my need for gory entertainment. :p

The learning outcomes already seem clear to me;
1. Don't pick up rats
2. If you absolutely feel compelled to pick up a rat, make sure it's a dead one.

Give the area a good wash and get a tetanus. I was bitten by a domestic rat last year and the Dr gave me a shot. Bite wounds are dirty, and rats tend to bite quite deep, so you possibly have an infection.

Don't they wriggle a bit going down? (Now you *hands on hips* - there was nothing smutty intended there).

I guess it'd be a bit like a cross between CSI and Total Wipeout. Now - if we could just work cobs into it, it'd have legs.... I'll get my people to talk to your people...

dead or alive, I go with learning outcome 1! :D:D

I have to say, I like rats. From the point of view that they are amazing creatures - smart, resourceful and wonderfully adaptable. And fascinating to dissect :p

But I do know the dangers and realise that some level of control is needed.

However, I still think that having Shils eat them probably goes against the rat equivalent of the Geneva Convention....

:( Still no news from BofF.

leptospirosis is zoonotic ( can be transferred from animal to human) if the rat had it then there is a high chance of it being passed onto you!

That;s what I was thinking MrsM, Hopefully she's been to a&e, thye gave her a big dose of antib's & now she is just sleeping it off - lets hope so anyway.
