Korben is on Royal Canin for large breeds - this is what his breeder gave him and we have continued with this.,

I have been reading about raw diets for dogs - Korben already gets chicken wings, fish, pigs feet and beef flanks, as part of his diet as well as brussell sprouts which he loves for some reason :D His Royal Canin is adjusted accordingly and I'm now finding I am feeding a mix of raw and dry - he seems to be thriving on this - his coat is shiny, his teeth look amazing and he is happy and energetic.

Im now toying with the idea of going entirely raw diet. Does anyone on here feed raw diet? Advise would be gratefully accepted :)
 
Do you find that pig's trotters give him wind? I've banned them from the house now as they go through Dax like nothing else. :eek:

She likes sprouts too but they don't have the same effect, thankfully!

Yes, chuck the RC and go raw, it suits wolfydogs best and works out cheaper once you've got the hang of it. I've been meaning to add up a list for a while, hang on...

1kg chicken wings = £2.30
1.3kg pork ribs = £2.60
3 x lamb's hearts = £1.30
2 x supermarket value beef mince = £2
2 x mackerel in oil = 70p
1 x piece of liver, any kind = 50p
4 x Fish4Dogs salmon sachets = 60p
2 x pieces of tripe = £1.50
3 x marrowbones = free
3 x knucklebones = free
Eggs, veg, meat scraps and leftovers from human food = negligible

That's at least 10 day's worth for mine, I think, it's a bit hard to quantify because I just buy things in bulk if they're cheap and then portion them up in freezer bags so the freezer is full of random bits. For example, the Fish4Dogs sachets were on offer for £21 if you bought two boxes (90 packets!) so I've enough now for months. Also as I currently work in catering I get a lot of meat scraps, cooked sausages and so on for free.

The pigs feet dont give him wind - we did try James WellBeloved feed when he was little but we have to change it back to RC just so that we could open our windows :D

I will take your list to the supermarket with me at the weekend and stock up - I dont want to rush him straight into the raw diet so I am going to assume I should slowly replace his RC with the raw over a few weeks?

Im quite excited about having my doggy on a raw diet - I think he will prefer it - might need a bigger freezer though lol

I'd put lots of good money on it that it's not the RC that is causing the big improvement!!! I wouldn't bother at all with the kibble, not a lot of point really, chuck it out or give it to a charity and go raw!!!

Yeah, Im thinking the same Karyn. Is it ok to just put him straight on the raw diet do you think? I would hate to upset his digestive system by just cutting out the kibble straight away - as it is he only gets one feed of RC in the morning and raw meats for his second feed - he had steak, garden peas and carrots with his tea tonight - hes better fed than my OH :D
 
I always go cold turkey with my dogs. I am not comfortable feeding raw and kibble.

Sometimes you get a detox period where they lose a little condition, coat goes a little dull ect but they will be over in a week of no kibble.
 
Thanks Katie - I will head down to the butchers in the morning - what should I be asking for? He has given me chicken wings and pig legs - I bought the beef flanks from Pets At Home from the freezer section and mum gets the fish from the fishmonger for him when she is buying her own (thats what grannies are for apparantly lol)
 
Chicken necks and back, wing and thighs.
Breast of lamb

Ribs

Livers, heart, kidneys.

I stay away from beef just because the bones are not great and i don't think its hold as much nutritional value and chicken.

The make up of his diet will be mostly chicken.
 
Thanks hun - now all I have to do is tell my mother that when she comes to doggy sit when we are both at work, she has to feed him dead stuff - I cant imagine thats going to be eagerly welcomed :D lol
 
Like Katielou I always put mine straight on raw and have never had a problem, you should be fine especially as you have already been feeding both. I feed breast of lamb which is cheap and includes the ribs, there is quite a bit of meat and fat with it so it makes for a really good meal, I split it between two which is quite generous really!!! For the bulk I get chicken carcasses and wings as they are great for maintenance of weight, being about 80% bone. Supermarket wings are quite soft bone wise as they are from young animals so are good for puppies and starters.

I'd guess "Mother" would draw the line at road kill then!!!

Haha - mother would have a fit if he ate roadkill - he's her precious boy - she retired this year and has replaced grown up grandkids with puppy care. It keeps her out of trouble :D She will get used to it, I will just leave a tupperware tub out with the meat inside - all she will have to do it open the lid and give him it - you should have seen her face the first time she saw him eat piggy toes :D
 
Hi guys, just wanted to give you an update.

Korben has now been on the raw diet for 2 weeks and he is thriving :D I can clearly see his coat is glowing and he is happier and has more energy. He is mostly on chicken, gets beef off the bone, liver, kidney, veg and raw eggs thrown in just cause he loves them really as well as marrowbones, knucklebones with plenty of meat on them thanks to my dog loving butcher :D He absolutely loves the chicken wings, these appear to be his favourite :D He does a wee dance in the kitchen on chicken wing day lol

Thankfully mother has taken to his new feeding regime very well and once I explained the benefits of the diet and shared the information I got on here she was fully on board.

Thanks again for all your help guys, this is one dog owner who wil never buy another bag of dog biscuit :D
 
Oh yes nothing better than a bit of BARF

Wouldnt feed too much beef though stick to lamb, tripe, chicken and fish :D can put you in contact with Locos breeder she is a BARF queen and introduced us to this way of feeding
 
He gets mostly chicken to be honest but yeah, Im still open to input as we are new to this. Not done fish yet though, still need to know how to feed that one :D
