Re-current colic thread update

Your kind wishes really do mean a lot - thank you xxx

Elective surgery is booked for 8.30 this morning and thankfully he hasn't had colic since being there to force things into an emergency situation. The surgeon has receommended that open surgery is the only sensible option at this point as keyhole is unlikely to show anything straight forward and would most likely end up going to full anyway.

Could take anything up to 3 hours so a long morning ahead. Work have been amazing and are happy for me to stay home today so need to keep busy and do housework is my plan.

My poor daughter has a uni exam this morning which she doesn't want to put off, not sure her head will be in the right place bless her.

Rossdales were amazing last night and let us go up to see him out of hours, just in case it was for the last time.

Hope all goes well today. Your daughter may be able to resit due to mitigating circumstances. Check with her personal tutor. Fingers crossed for him.xx

Well he's out of surgery and recovering well.

Not sure what is good or bad news really!! Nothing sinister or major was found except for a slight thickening of the colon and small intestine in a couple of places. Biopsies have been taken but results won't be available until next week.

Apart from that he appears to be a very healthy horse - and much loved by the staff already bless him.

All we can do for now is pray that a result comes back from the biopsies and that steroids can solve any problems.

Well that's good news - at least nothing sinister found.

I am sure it's massively frustrating not to know what is causing it but you are doing your absolute best for him and I wish you all the luck possible.

Pleased he's still with you. Fingers crossed that he has no repeat episodes. Did they have any idea what the thickening may have been caused by or as a result of?

Not sure until the results come back but could be inflammation of some sort. If this is the case - and I pray it is - then steroids should put it right.

We are off to Rossdales this afternoon for a visit and a big cuddle.

oh my goodness - have just caught up with this. Bless you! What a dreadfully worrying time you have had, and your poor daughter with exams too. I hope they will make allowances if necessary. sending healing vibes for your boy's problems to be sorted now - well done for all you have done for him too. x x

Another update!!

The surgeon from Rossdales called last night to say that the biopsy results had come back quicker than expected. Upshot is he has inflammation in his colon.

Much as I'm not happy that he is ill it is a relief that something has shown up for us to deal with and hopefully nothing too sinister. He is starting on steroids and we are going to meet with another vet there on Monday to talk about how we manage his diet for now. This isn't an instant fix but we are all hopeful that he will respond well to the treatment and pick up condition and make a full recovery in time.

Positive news I'm hoping :)

As you say not great to hear that he is ill but good news that there is something that you can actively treat! Got my fingers crossed for a positive outcome for you, keep us updated :)

That sounds like good news :)

Everything crossed that some diet changes & drugs will have him back to his normal, colic free self & you'll have many more happy years together x

So pleased you have the biopsy results. You must be feeling so much better now that you have a plan of action. Very relieved for you. How is he doing??

Thank you so much - everyone!!

We visited yesterday and he is doing so well bless him. Still in intensive care but came round well after op. Only allowed to eat bran mash and handfuls of hay from time to time and he was very disappointed that we hadn't brought him anything to eat!! We were allowed to take him to the grass outside to munch in hand for 5 mins. Was such a good boy.

Still has cannulas sown into his neck and a massive scar on his tummy but that is not surprising :)
