Went to put this in Latest News then Soapbox then thought here best? Oh whatever don't know where's the right place but here goes!!

Just read a post about LPG in New Lounge anyway this is how I feel, I would love to get a 4WD and convert it to LPG, would love to tow my horse and go to local events, great for emergencies too but what's the point?? If anyone can give me a good reason then do!!.....

..........................................................................................

Oh don't get me going on this one, Bloody government want us to use our cars less as we are polluting the planet but when you want to convert your car to LPG, which is less polluting so I would assume that is what they want, what do they do but make it so difficult and try to extract the same amount tax as for people running on petrol!!

Where's the incentive to do anything about the planet when all they do is tax us more and more if they don't put it on the LPG, and I have heard that that is going to go up too, then they put it on the road fund licence and then the insurance companies want more money because you have 'modified' your vehicle, how much more money can we shell out? why should you have to pay more because you are 'trying' to save the environment??!!

I live in a semi rural area, not far from London in fact, but I don't have a bus route to take my kids to school, there's no bus or train I can catch to work as I work in different places each week. There just isn't the public transport available. It's like a village with 1 shop and a pub and that's it and even though I am about 25 miles from the centre of London I may as well be in the Highlands of Scotland as far as the facilities are concerned and public transport, there's a bus that goes down the road about every 2 hours, so how am I supposed to get the kids to school and me to work by 9am? And what about people who live in very rural areas and need vehicles for their lively hood? It's all just P*SSing me off no end.

Unfortunately the powers that be and the greenies just look at people who live in cities and have access to public transport. Why don't they try living in a rural area and get the kids to school, get their shopping, go to work, etc, etc, etc? All without a car and using public transport. Unfortunately gone are the days when we all lived in the same village, town that we were brought up in, work in, kids go to school in etc. These days you have to go where the work is, in most cases, and that unfortunately means making a journey and often in a car.

I could have done with a 4WD today with the amount of roads that are flooded around here and the state of the road surfaces with all the pot holes that seem to materialise on a daily basis, would the government like to sponsor me for one as the Cr*p state of the roads round here that are ruining my suspension on my regular car?

Oh by the way there's an advert on TV at the moment for a hybrid car great you'd think? only if you have £35K spare! Now that would buy a lot of petrol for my MINI!!!!!!!

I wouldn't bother getting a 4x4 converted. If you take in to account the cost of conversion you will have to run the thing for YEARS to break even! You also loose most of your boot space for the tank.

We did a fair few conversions when the kits first came out, but they don't make economic sense any more. You are better off running the 4X4 on veggie oil.

Also, the chances of finding anyone brave/stupid enough to do any welding on your converted 4x4 are nill... no one wants to take the risk..... Booommmm!

We just bought an old banger Peugeot 106 van today, £410 to buy, £120 tax for the year and £195 insurance. We bought the Peugeot not because we thought it was clever to have three vehicles, but because we're trying to get our fuel costs down! We run a big van which does daily deliveries and often runs full to the roof, and a Landrover which we use for towing the horse trailer and the flatbed trailer, for when we deliver hay to customers. We're going to try to leave the Landy at home most of the time, the big van at work and rattle about in the grotty tin can. It doesn't seem like the best option, but maybe it'll help?

Forgot to say, we also live in the middle of nowhere, ony a pub in our village, nearest shop is a couple of miles away, our shop is six miles from home and there are no shops or garages on the way. We're moving to the middle of Dartmoor soon, no near neighbours and the nearest shop is a 20 minute drive, so public transport is a no no!

Sideways rant, if I may:

there is no support whatsoever for greener practices. We're doing extenssive work to our house and since we have dug up the garden we thought we'd put a ground source heat pump in which would run practically for free. Due to various techinical complications the only thing we needed was three phase electricity which came to a pole just in our field, 50 yards from the house. Scottish Power quoted us £14,000 to move it these 50 yards over our own land!

I have an LPG 4x4 - it's much cheaper. I don't think I'd be alone in saying that's the best reason for converting! Incidentally, LPG tax is frozen until 2011 and by my (admittedly dodgy) calculations, it would take me 18 months to recoup the outlay of converting. I am an LPG freak - but not because of the planet...!

Id love an LPG car but i have been told that only Petrol cars can be converted and there arent any LPG 4x4s forsale brandnew....?????
I could be wrong and my OH may be telling me porkies coz he doesnt want to buy me one!!!!

Yes, that's right - you can only convert petrol engines, not diesel. Some companies (Nissan, Mitsubishi) are offering free conversion if you buy brand new 4x4. However I'd recommend buying second-hand, pre-2001. Have a look on Autotrader and Ebay - there are lots. For what it's worth, I paid 1900 pounds for my ready converted 4.0L Jeep Cherokee second hand. I think I've saved that much already in fuel relative to petrol!
