The current price of horse meat (obtained from the Italian Camera of Commerce website) is as follows...

Suckling Foal 2.10-2.40 euros a kilo (live weight).

Weaned Foals 1.60-1.80 euros a kilo (.. ..).

Adult Equines 1.30-1.40 euros a kilo (.. ..).

Please see my post on this thread .

These people are taking you for a ride !

Most of these animals were bred for the meat trade .

The drive to Italy is roughly 8 hours and they ARE NOW MONITORED AND RESTED EVERY 8 HOURS as is required by the law. Of course there will be the odd one who doesnt respect the law but sadly thats life!

The idea that there are mares in foal going to the slaughterhouse may be correct BUT, cows in calf go to the slaughterhouse and the meat from the unborn calf is introduced into the foodchain and is known as 'Slink'-its amazing what goes into sausages etc

.

Please do not fall for this scam-help the horses at home who may also end up on the meatwagon.

I do kind of agree, there will be unscrupulous ones without checks etc. but why the rescuing of horse in france with so many in need over here? Is it because they are cheaper?
It is not nice to think about, I have seen the pics of the donker with no hoof..that is disgusting and it will hopefully go to meat to end its suffering.

No, I am not blinkered in the least. The prices I quoted are the Italian prices-live and breathing at the slaughterhouse gates!
If theses are the prices paid here in Italy it is obvious enough that the prices paid by the Italian meat dealers to the French will be even lower (and take another bit off to cover the transport costs)!! I repeat-you are being taken for a ride and are not helping the transport situation for these horses in any way as far as I can see. If you are then please explain to me how you are helping!!!!!!!!!
If you really want to be of help join the 'Animal Angels' and go on frontier duty at Gorizia. Gorizia is the frontier town between Italy and the Baltic states where all of the equine meat trucks from the eastern countries arrive. It is here where the horses need help, not at Ventimiglia which is where horses arriving from France enter Italy (the majority).
Mairi.

The exact law re length of time in transit is 24 hours travel then 24 hours rest. Food/water to be given after 8 hours. Mairi is correct in saying it is the animals travelling through Gorizia that have drawn the worst straw. I have seen 40 donkeys that have travelled from Eastern Europe through Gorizia to Belgium. They were travelling in an old furniture lorry. On arrival in Belgium they were close to death from dehydration. Fortunately they were tough little beasts and survived.

And donkeys from here go into italian salami

not on the hoof...only on the hook

Its a good job the ILPH campaign does not rely on individuals like yourself!
You appear to oppose a worthy cause whenever the opportunity arises. Please don't be misled and possibly mislead others into beliveing that there is not a desperate need for change for these unfortunate horses.
When eventually the legislation is put into force and good practise in transporting has to happen then things will and only then change for the better.
Treating these poor horses with the consideration they deserve will not be cost effective-meat price of the horse will go up and then this nasty trade will stop.
Live export needs to be banned!!!!

It seems to me Blueberry, that you and Mairi are actually fighting the same battle but from different corners.

It seems to me that Blueberry just enjoys fighting, to have searched out this thread which is well over a month old and would probably be on about page 52 of the forum shows true dedication to your cause (amongst other things) is not the arguement in Latest News enough for you?

See, I come on here and now I have burnt the cakes! Grr. Coincidentally Blueberry Muffins. Burnt buns anyone? Good for throwing at people!

What do you want from me?
You know nothing about me, my beliefs or my actions.
I am against live transport to foreign slaughterhouses.
I am against indiscriminate breeding.
I have my fair share of equine and other cast offs and have actually bought equines in the past in order to give them a last few days of dignity before being put down AND buried (Illegally) here at my home -at my expense!!! Im sorry, you are'holier than thou'. You know sweet fanny adams about me-how dare you!
I am a member of the ILPH, LAV, OIPA:...etc Talking to you lot is like screaming in the wind!

Mairi please take some deep breaths & reeelaaaax.

From your posts here I've always thought of you as a caring, knowledgeable lady so please don't let someone whose trying to stir trouble upset you.

Bluebottle, you talk a load of bollox....end of.

you have been on this forum 5 minutes, tried to "tell" members that "rescuing" crappy "meathorses" was THE way to go...slagged off members who are actually in the frontline..who by their own admission, have bought from meat markets, and regretted it.
Paolino is an HHO PONY...ask Mairi if you are interested what this means....i'm sure she will tell you she wont be getting anymore Paolino's....

get a grip on reallity...buying a horse/s from the meatman IS fuelling the problem...

like I said JM-its like shouting in the wind! It will all die down and theyll move on to another 'fashionable' cause soon enough

. Dunno, what do you think of 'Save the Tapeworm'-poor things are looked on with disgust and poisoned to death using chemicals-dont they have rights too???? PLEASE NOTE-I am being facetious before you all go back to the IH forum to make snide comments (potatoes

They certainly do Mairi. One in particular is very easy to wind up though if you get bored and need some weekend fun...

But there are some on the "other thread" who speak sense - Sherman and EMW. Others are in danger of ruining sensible debate and discussion with their rantings on.

Commendable how many new people have joined HHO though to appear on that thread. Let's hope we see them posting regularly elsewhere too, always nice to get different people and ideas on the Forum.

Mairi; some people are not able to see things logically......thankfully the rest of us can.

Don't feel so bad - I was suckered into this "rescue thing" too......I very quickly learned that it was indeed fuelling the situation which is why I also take the same line as you now. Hard as it is, I now fully understand that NOT buying these horses is one of the best things you can do to try to do your bit for the overall picture.....and to stand behind the ILPH, because as I've said a hundred times, they are the only ones who have the clout to really do something about this.

We live and learn eh? Well most of us do thankfully.

you are indeed a rude person and there is no need to use that kind of language......on a different issue, blueberry has commented on a different issue but I imagine you would have something to say about that also

The facts are the facts are the facts. It's irrelevant whether they are passed on in a nice manner or a rude manner. Why do so many people get so hung up on how something is said.....rather than WHAT is said?
