Really Big Yorkshire Terriers?

Ok so i have been dog hunting and went to a pet shop yesterday that had a really big choice and i absolutely fell in love with a yorkshire terrier but it wasnt your usual it was a really big one - the size of a staff or small colly - it was really scruffy (just my type!)- anyway there was only one and it was already sold and waiting to be collected - i was gutted and have scoured the internet looking for others for sale and cant find any - just the usual little ones which isnt what im after - can anyone help me find a breeder?

You do not get YT's the size of a staffy/collie.

I would recommend you go to a rescue centre not a petshop, there will be hundreds of dogs looking for good homes there

Really? The lady who owned the pet shop was adament it was a large yorkshire terrier - that would explain why i cant find another one on t'internet.
I wouldnt even have cared that it was cross - i just really liked him.

Honestly, go to a nice rescue centre, and you will be able to choose from hundreds - it is likely you will find one just like the one in the pet shop tbh

I have two yorkies- one is very small (8 inches high at the shoulder) and the other is quite a bit bigger than him (about 14 inches tall)

I've never seen one as big as you say, and it was likely a cross breed.

How about giving a rescue dog a home?

The trouble with petshops is that they get their puppies from puppy farms, they often won't be vaccinated, and you won't be able to see their parents which is really important in choosing a puppy. This link has some info : http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/208

Yep that's why you shouldn't buy from a pet shop!

Hopalong, I had one of these Yorkshire Terriers and he is the light of my life, such a sweetie with a huge personality and very affectionate. He gets spoiled rotten! He wasn't at all traumatised by his experience as he was rescued at 2 months, I had him at 8 months. The older dogs were a lot harder to rehabilitate, but all of them found loving homes in the end. I sometimes meet other people with dogs that came from this rescue as it was in my area and they made strenuous efforts to rehome them all locally.

It does highlight the dangers of puppy farms though. 200 dogs were kept caged in abject squalor, but the breeder was showing them to buyers in her home, no one had any idea. Even the Kennel Club had told her to cut back on her breeding but they never followed up their recommendation with a further inspection.
 
Tikka is a rescue dog....She is a big part of our family, She is fantastic with my 2 boys , she is an absolute looper and I laugh at everything she does, When I am down she is there with her head into your hands and looks at you as if to say ... " dont be sad , Im here

I would even go as far as to say that she saved my life and the life of my family . Shes a one in a million .

Please do think about rehoming a rescue dog, not only is it rewarding but you are giving an unwanted/abused or whatever the case may be .... a home , and believe you me .... that dog will be a forever friend .

The type of link all pet shop purchasers need to see....to the OP this is what the puppy you saw could have come from this type of scenario and it's mother will be rotting somewhere whilst she waits to become useful again when she comes back into season

Almost certainly the pups in the pet shop were not from reputable breeders as they would have no reason to sell pups on this way as the really good ones have waiting lists from the 1 or 2 bitches they have a litter from each year and most likely came from conditions similar to the yorkies. How bloody awful was that

I didn't even realise they still sold pups in pets shops in this country. I haven't seen one since I was a child and that was many many years ago
 
According to the KC breed standard the maximum size for a yorkie is 7lb weight. So if it were collie size it would have to be very underweight to fit the breed standard

As others please either go to a rescue , where I expect they have plenty of yorkie crosses as they are one of the "fashionable" crosses at the mo, or find a decent breeder.
I actually didn't realise pet shops sold puppies any more, although I know there are big commercial places (like one in the North West I probably should not mention) who are like puppy supermarkets.
