Had a phone call from a neighbour whose house sits at the far end and overlooks our horses' field this afternoon about our two horses. I thought at first he was going to complain about something (I have only ever spoken to him twice in passing)
He started out by saying that first of all he just wanted to say how lovely it is to have horses in the park (I was waiting for the "BUT...") but he went on to say how fantastic it was to see horses so well looked after and obviously loved. He said he'd often seen the lights on in the field (-horses live out 99% of the time with access to the stable) last thing at night ( I go out and check them before bed) and that he and his wife feel strongly about animal welfare and that they felt they just had to let us know how impressed they and their next door neighbour are.
At the time I was mopping up dog sick

and getting a phone call like that really lifted my mood. Sadly, it's all too rare that someone will go out of their way to tell you "well done" and it really restored my faith in humanity. Sorry, just had to share!

How lovely. We have an elderly couple live at the edge of our field - we don't live there - and they say how well we care for them, and they are grateful they can go in and talk to them all!! They always ring us if they are worried about anything too.

There are still some good people in this world

There is a cottage attached to the farm where we keep our horses and the couple that live there have offered to feed and check the horses on Christmas Day. We will be up for a short ride in the morning anyway buy normally go to the yard again later to top up hay etc. We have only chatted over the garden fence and the lady of the house used to have her own horse and just misses them. I think we will take them up on the offer as it would seem almost rude to turn them down on such a special day and I'll buy them some choccy's or somthing for their kindness.

I used to keep mine in a village near my work...and at a show I was chatting to a judge who said 'I know your horses...' described my mare perfectly to me, down to what rugs she wore...and how well he thought she always looked!
And this was some show judge I'd never met...just shows you how horsey people can't resist checking out your animals

That is lovely to hear. And it's always a good thing when you have your neighbours on 'your side' - another couple of people on the lookout for you and you horses!

aww thats nice!!! I have good neighbours generally apart from one on top of field 2 who moans that horses eat his apples!! I mean come on!! they drop in the field!! (I have told them not to nibble tho!!),

Pretty much all of the neighbours have been really supportive and welcoming to the horses since we moved them home, saying it makes such a lovely change from sheep! My next door neighbours are always looking out for them, phoning me whenever there were fireworks in the area during the two weeks around Halloween to ask if they were ok. Incidentally, neither of them batted an eyelid with the fireworks, which thankfully weren't in the immediate vicinity.
It really makes a difference from the general local crofting opinion that horses ruin the ground and are the spawn of Satan- although I have to admit Min has his days as the latter!
