Both my boys have got really really dry hooves. The old boy, who is unshod, hooves are just appalling (sp) and Galans look dry and flaky at coronet too.

Ideas on what the best either homemade remedies or hoof moisturisers around are?

I've just started using Corncrescine daily hoof moisturiser on Mason's feet. He's only shod on the front, and his back feet were starting to chip and get a bit flaky on the sole.
His feet certainly seem to drink it up, (it's absorbed in within a couple of minutes) it's water based, and it comes with a paintbrush in the pot so it's easy to apply.

I always worry about applying vaseline to something that is already dry...
I thought it was a water barrier? I can understand using it to keep something moist that is already moist, but I'm not aware that it's actually a moisturiser...
(prepares to be corrected!)

My mares are really dry atm and cracking up terribly...she's been barefoot since having foal *With no problems*...but typically as I'm wanting to put shoes back on her next Thurs her hooves look shocking but my farrier just suggested squirting baby oil on..its amazing how quick it soakes in!!

My mares feet are breaking up a bit at the moment and the farrier today recommended vaseline to lock the moisture in. I already use Kevin Bacon dressing but it's not doing a lot. The cracking though is my fault as that's how her feet were then last Summer (on my farrier's recommendation) I started putting eucalyptus oil on them around the nail holes and any chipped bits and they've been great since... however dropped the glass bottle a month ago and not got round to replacing it and since then they've been progressively getting worse again so...

Vaseline and eucalyptus oil - it's magic!

I use Kevin Bacon liquid hoof oil daily, my horses hooves are normally terrible as soon as it dries up but this year they are great, farrier commented last time he was shod, I told him I was using it every day, he said it showed. I also give him Formula 4 Feet

Oh I'm so glad it's not just my boy... His hooves are normally very good but they've been chipping a bit the last couple of weeks and I wondered if it was his diet (though they were great before) but the fact it's so hot makes sense. I'll give the baby oil suggestion a go :)

I like naf hoof moist or aqueous cream from the chemist - not a fan of barriers in dry weather like oils and vaseline. I also tip out their water trough once a week so they stand in a slighty damp it of ground every now and again too. Totally solid hooves, though tbh I think since they grow good hooves then the credit must go to them rather than me for slapping a bit of cream on every now and again!!

Hey, when my horse came to be his feet were awful! Cracking, and just so dry.. We discovered a hoof moist made by 'NAF' and ever since weve used it, his feet are completly differnt! Before we used 2 have him shod every 4 weeks, now since weve used the stuff its changed to every 6 weeks!... try it! 'NAF' hoof moist :)

baby oil huh? I am liking that idea as ours have very dry hooves at the moment and I have a very empty purse so I am all about the reasonable remedies just now!
