Hannah was quite restless again last night, but again no sign of a foalie.

I went in this morning and she had the huge bag she has had for the past few days, but there is no wax and she is not running milk. Her quarters are still soft and a bit saggy, her vulva is long and puffy and her tail is still rubbery. I can still see the last rib I could see last night which suggests Hanlette has dropped down even more.

I put her out in the field for a few hours and when I brought her in her bag had completely decreased (not been doing this), but there is still swelling in front of it, however the bag itself has reduced a lot. So I am now worried that something is not right because it has been staying up for the past 3-4 days, and if there is nothing wrong then this suggests she has a long long way to go yet I think.

Anyone had something simliar happen to them?

How do you know if something is not right with the foal (in that it is no longer alive in the womb)?

if you are really worried hun then call your vet and just ask them to come and check her. Theres no harm in that and it will put your mind at rest either way.

i cant give you advice as i have much experience in foaling.

just fingers crossed for you that everything is ok, which i am sure it is.

hope that disgrace is behaving herself for you

Thanks, but it is really hard not to. She has looked ready to foal for just under a week, her bag remaining incredibly swollen even when she goes out. Today it had completely gone... surely it shouldn't do that.

I am umming and ahhing about phoning the vets... But even if something is wrong, they will still have to wait until she decides to birth according to what I have read.

As mares tend to foal at night, I have known people turn their horses out for a few hours everyday and bring them in each night. It may because she has been stood and then you have given her turnout.

Some mares do seem to bag up literally weeks before foaling- we got all excited last year as Lugs bagged up and the baby dropped so we called the stud guy, he checked her and said it was a long way off. He was right- she stayed the same for 2 weeks then suprised everyone by waxing up at 9pm and delivering at midnight.

Disgrace is in disgrace this morning... she has been screaming and screaming for Hannah (her mirror is still not up but is definitely going up tonight after today's episode).

I would imagine Hannah would look ill or something if anything had happened to foaly due to infection inside her???
I know its very hard not to panic but she is only 4 days overdue, weather is horrid at the moment so it may be affecting things.

I'm sure everything is fine, Hannah just wants to keep us all on the edge of our seats for a little longer. I just can't wait to know if the nail test worked!!!!!

What are you calculating Hannah's due date on? they can start being due anything from 322 days up to 344 days and some are even later than that, so don't pannic it will all be fine. I found in our mares there would be alot of foal activity the week before and then foal would go quite still and quiet I presume because it has finally got itself into position. Remember if they can make you wait and have no sleep then they will do that, I think some broodmares have a very sick sense of humor at times.

I know absolutely nothing about foaling.... but I DO know you'll feel a lot better if you pick up the phone and have a chat to the vet. I'm sure the vet will be able to put your mind at rest in a quick chat, and light on everything.

Don't forget too you'll be completely knackered yourself and she is only a few days overdue

I just keep bursting into tears, but I think that is the lack of sleep doing that!

I have phoned the vets and someone is going to get back to me.

cazza... I was given her due date by stud.

She was AI'd so they know exactly when she was inseminated etc. She was put in foal on 25th March 2006, so is therefore due on 1st March.

We call this 'backing off', it does happen, but don't be fooled by it! I had a maiden almost catch me out last week as I thought exactly the same, that her bag had gone down, BUT on taking a step back a appraising her as a whole, I could see the baby had turned and that her stomach was pointed (this is not always obvious btw), so I fugured she was closer than her bag would have me believe. We were checking her (and the others) every 10 or so minutes and I happened along as the feet were poking out!!

Please stop worrying hun! Did you say that you were going to breed from her again????

I agree with this. Whenever i'm worried or something is playing on my mind then I get the vet because although I often know, before the vet even arrives, that they'll say there is nothing to worry about, I believe the fee is worth my peace of mind! This is just one horse though, my "pet" one who i'm paranoid about and very protective of!!!! Others i'm far more sensible about calling the vet and can think objectively with them whether I need the vet or not.

If you think your piece of mind is worth a call out fee then get them!!

SN - please remind me NEVER EVER to breed from her again!!!!

I'll nip up and take some pictures of her in a bit and put them on here so someone else can have a look. I think because I am looking all of the time I am not seeing the things that I should be (hope you know what I mean).

The bag has completely gone down in the two and a half hours she was out... there was no running around like she did yesterday, and she seemed quite calm. She has eaten all of her breakfast and was starting on her haylage when I left.

LOL - oh hunny, chin up - you are enjoying this remember!! It WILL be worth it in the end! I have to go to bed now, but you have my number, don't be affraid to use it if you need to!! I really mean that - after all, you can guarantee, that out of everyone on here, who resides in the UK, I will be the one who is up ALLLLLLLL night!! You can ring me just for a chat if you like!!!

I always calcute the date on 11 months + 10 days so I would have Wed as her due date. Some mares carry for 12 months with no problems. I have had some mares bag up and be up and down moaning and groaning all night and doing everything bar foal then carry on as normal with no other signs and foal in a week.

If the foal had died the mare would be very ill nd there would be a nasty discharge so don.t worry. She has not read the books and will foal when she is ready not you.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that it's actually the foal who dictates the due date. Maybe this little one is waiting for the warmer weather!

Please let us know what your vet says.

The mare next door did several nights of false labour - digging up her bed and getting really restless. She foaled a week later than her date and was over and done in an hour. Another mare we had here was quiet as the grave at 12 midnight and we thought we'd leave her til 3. Changed our minds and foal was on its way (front hooves out) by 1.30am (we chickened out after an hour and a half!). Sorry, can't remember if she was overdue. These were both second foals.

Please try not to worry.
