Am in need of a very warm jacket for riding (actually I’m not too bad in my lesson, it’s before and after when I really freeze).
Would prefer washable. Price immaterial as husband is buying for Christmas :D
Any ideas?

Wellenstyn without a doubt.

They are the warmest jackets. I’ve had my Zermatt style for 5 years now. It looks like new despite washing. I always have compliments on it and 4 of my friends have purchased them too. They really are great quality and hard wearing.
I got mine from https://www.coolequestrian.co.uk
Coo! That looks the business thanks! I shall have to be very nice to husband but as you’ve said, it’s actually an investment because he’ll never need to buy another 😉.

Also, I know it’s a Christmas present but Cool Equestrian usually have a Boxing Day sale that makes it a little kinder on the wallet!

I rode this morning in my AlpKit down jacket (big puffy thing that I use for winter camping and long walks in sub zero temperatures). It only comes to the yard when the temperature drops below zero or I'd be a big sweaty mess. Mine's a few years old but I think this is the current equivalent.

I'd second the suggestion to look for walking / climbing / ski kit. And I'd agree that TK Maxx is great for that kind of thing, but you do need to go in (or log on) regularly to sniff around.

is the down ethically sourced?

This is a very good question and I think would be the main problem with buying anything down! AlpKit do their best to ensure that it is all ethically sourced but they are quite honest in admitting that supply chains are complicated and it's not possible to be absolutely 100% sure that farmers are complying - there is a certain amount of trust in the system. https://www.alpkit.com/blogs/develop/down-sourcing-2014

cool-I asked the question really to make people think about it-too many are not aware. I wouldnt choose to wear it myself but as long as people are making informed choices :)

I have a Regatta 3-in-1 jacket. It's basically a waterproof outer shell jacket with a fleece inner lining jacket, so you can wear either separately or put the fleece inside for colder weather. I love it because it's so versatile. I got it from their clearance website so it wasn't very expensive, around £35 I think. They do size up quite small though - I had to get 2 sizes bigger than normal, but I am quite broad across the shoulders.

Regatta have some great stuff. My go to jacket is my musto snug but in very cold weather I layer it with a fluffy lined regatta hoodie and it is so warm I end up taking it off for any mucking out/riding. It is impossible to be cold in it even standing around.

I love this one - it literally has everything - great price, durable (so far), it has a fleece lined section which you can button up to keep cheeks and neck warm, it has loads of good sized pockets inside and out, it's waterproof, really warm, has a fold away hood, drawstring bottom so it doesn't get breezy, and it's fleecy on the inside.

I was going to say just ride faster :p

But you actually don't want a warm jacket for riding. You want a warm jacket for the boring existence off a horse, and that's not my area at all. I just freeze and regret my life choices at those times.

See I don't riding in a jacket or coat especially schooling, I wear thin layer jumpers and a thin fleece with a body warmer, my jackets I always always end up taking them off no matter what I am doing

Thank you all for your suggestions! Yes, it’s actually not the riding lesson bit - after 15 mins I’m boiling - it’s the time before and after (don’t have my own horse but spend time at the stables). Had to wear my best i.e. ‘going out’ Barbour jacket today, pity I forgot the handkerchief 😱.

I wear hoodies and push the sleeves up. I have a real thing about stuff around my hands when I'm doing stuff. It has to be properly cold for me to be in long sleeves.

this looks really good! Much cheaper than the Toggi one I was thinking of buying

You have them rolled up in your profile picture! I just feel a bit restricted in a jacket I don't like driving in one either, although I did keep my jacket on for my lesson this morning as I was cold the wind was bitter.

That's a polo shirt - but I have them rolled up in my fb profile photo and almost every hoodie-wearing photo ever taken ;) Jackets are restrictive - I don't like not being able to twist and bend and flop about :p

I use a battery powered vest under my normal jacket. Three heat settings, absolutely love it. Am getting the soles next, for my yard boots 😁
