Reason for a replacement passport?

My new horse came with a replacement passport issued last year in Ireland, with the dealer who imported her listed as the owner. My vet's happy that there are no red flags between the passport and the actual horse, and there was no evidence of a second microchip, so I was just wondering why the replacement passport?

Is it simply that the horse was never microchipped/passported until the dealer bought her?

Probably, yes.

My mare was given a passport literally as she set foot on the ferry to come over from Ireland as a 5yr old. Goodness knows who owned her or what she did before then! Vet happy that age matches teeth (or thereabouts) and no jiggery-pokery regarding additional microchips. Just lack of documentation!

2 of mine have replacements. One passport apparently went AWOL between owners (has breeder's details recorded and then I'm the next owner, but I know of at least 2 more people that had her in between...) and the other is one of my HAPPA horses, she was seized back from a borrower and they retained the original.

I'd say yours probably wasn't passported before.

That sounds very like mine! I thought it was probably the case, but good to know it's fairly common.

I'd really love to find out more about her early years (I know she's definitely had a foal or two!) but there's nothing to go on in her passport at all. I have a feeling that it shall remain a mystery... If only they could talk!

I'm half-tempted to drop the dealer a line and see if she knows anything, but she imports so many that I can't imagine my little cob would have stuck in her mind.

But I'm happy with the horse I've got in front of me and, so far, she doesn't seem to have any deep-seated issues that need to be explained. She's just a nice, green little cob.
