Have sold my 4yo and buyer is sending a pro transporter tomorrow.
Should i send a receipt with him? or does she need to sign something? never done this before, last time i sold a horse it was the middle ages and you were just handed the cash and they drove off!

Ah, I'm glad that you've found a buyer for him, he's a lovely chap. How/when is the buyer proposing to pay, or have they already paid?

Do you have good internet connection at the yard if the payment is to go through once the transporter has turned up?

I never met the vendor of the IDx, as she was sold via her breeder. I sent the vendor the money on line and she confirmed it that it had arrived with the breeder, who could then release the horse, plus the vendor sent me a reciept.

i sold my fell last year and never met the buyer. I sorted transport my end and I popped a written receipt inside the passport stating “black fell 3 year old (passport name) sold as seen by (me) to (buyer) for the price of (price) received on (date) in full.

i signed it and sent the pony on her way

just to add I received the money the evening before the transport arrived. It was all very straightforward

internet is fairly weak at the yard though i can generally get online with a bit of patience and wandering about. she is paying by bank transfer, i assume beforehand but i can manage if she does it at the time.

thanks, I think it will be a lovely home for him, they adored him and i feel like i've done right by him, which is all you can hope for.

In the same situation, I paid the balance as soon as the vetting was passed. I got a handwritten receipt given to the transporter with the passport.

With a professional seller, he emailed a printed receipt as soon as my payment had gone through. I was going away for a couple of weeks for work, so bought and put him on schooling livery and he was delivered when I got back.

thanks all. i did a google before posting and all the suggestions were that both parties signed and were also witnessed, seemed a bit OTT for a private sale but thought i would check what others had done.

When I sold the big horse I was paid before the day of transport and emailed over a receipt of sale which they countersigned and sent back.

I signed something when I put my deposit down on the day along the lines of agreed price, deposit paid and subject to 5 stage vetting but no signature for the bill of sale.

Bill of sale had date, amount paid, description, registered and stable name, microchip number and mentioned passed vetting and date.

In both cases passport authorities required bill of sale when changing ownership.

When I bought my youngster last year, I transfered the money the day before the transporter picked him up and the seller just gave the transporter his passport, we didn't even think of doing a receipt.

I'm not sure how wise that was though, I spent that night panicking that the seller now had both the pony and my money and frantically crossed my fingers that the pony would actually be there when the transporter turned up, luckily my sellers were lovely and packed him off on his travels and sent me photos of him loading.

When I bought Charlie, the seller sent me videos of him loading onto the lorry and I transferred the money. She then sent two receipts with the transporter (a friend of hers) one of which I signed and the transporter took it back with her.

I sold one in similar circumstances. Make sure you have the money before waving the transporter off and i just emailed over the receipt then gave the passport to the transporter.

When I bought my horse in Spain, unseen, the seller provided a sales contract that he signed, and then sent to me (e-mail) that I signed and sent back to him. I transferred the money, arranged the shipping, they did the rest of the health paperwork for transport, and that was that. Horse came with his passport and a receipt from the transport company.

They confirmed that the money was there and I sent them copies from my end as well, showing when I transferred it.

Maybe not the best or most legit way, but I think that I own the horse ? eh, it's been 5 years now ?‍♀️
