Hi all I am currently looking for some clippers. I am a total novice at clipping as have never yet clipped in my life. This year my mare will need to be clipped several times but will need a full clip shortly before her winter coat starts to fall out as it causes her huge problems (she has an autoimmune disorder). She is an Icelandic so has an enormous coat each year which takes some getting through. My mate has some cordless clippers which cope with giving her a bib clip but will not be man enough to do a full clip. So I need to buy some clippers soon. Have a tight budget (no more than £200 hopefully much less).

Have seen these http://www.masterclip.co.uk/landing...ate Combo&nProducts=Horse_Heavy_Duty_clippers
Do you think these will be up to the challenge?

I have Liveryman clippers which while good are very noisy and heavy. I would recommend Heiniger (sp?)clippers which my friend had. Not too heavy quiet and dod a good job.

I have the masterclip clippers, had them for 4 years, never let me down. My horse used to get fully clipped 2-3 times during winter and has her legs clipped every couple of months. They can sometimes get hot but thats when they need servicing. They are great value for the price and as i say I've had mine for four years and tbf they don't give the best finish like the expensive brands but after a couple of days you cannot tell anyway. :)

I have maverick clippers- I love them because I'm not all that experienced at clipping and they have a self-tensioning system so you don't have to worry about it, and the head rotates to help get the tricky bits- I love clipping with them. Only down side is they are tricky to get started- you have to run them for a few minutes to get them warm before clipping or they cut out (apparently its a safety feature) and you can't keep them outside- they need the warmth of a house, so they are a bit 'quirky' for clippers! But I like them for the ease of use once they're going!

My thoughts exactly! I have the Heineger Progress clippers which are lightweight, have a small grip and are quiet. They have successfully hogged, and clipped for years and the blades have stayed sharp. They're also under £200 :)

There is an excellent article on clippers on pages 10 and 11 of the August 2012 issue of Equestrian Business Monthly stating that one needs 75mm wide clipper blade to clip multiple times and one should expect to pay between £300 - £500.
 seriously?!

I paid £180 for mine and they're brilliant!

Clippersharp have Stars at a good price at the moment - ordered some yesterday £205 inc delivery. I have Liveryman Harmony which were fine for 2 finer coated cobs & a cushings pony with a coat like sheepskin. Jason, however, has a much greasier coat & they are just not man enough, even after a bath. Tested my friends Stars & they were great. I think it's coat texture rather than thickness that makes a lot of the difference.
