Well I've always used Ariat Mudbusters and they've always been superb, however I bought a pair at the beginning of October and both left and right ones have split where the sole joins the welly, so I am not getting any more. They are letting water in, and I am not happy. I contacted the online company I bought them from who said that I can return them for a refund, but they didn't have any to replace them with, so I need some more wellies and soon!
Can you recommmend me some good waterproof, strong wellies with good grip (not Hunters, thanks) and which may also be used for riding. I have quite "shapely" calves, so need something that I can get my jeans into as well - I've seen some Shires performance ones, but not sure of the calf width or whether they can be used for riding......help!

i was badgered into buying muck boots 3 weeks ago dispite never liking the look of them as i could not get a pair to last more then a week
i have to admit defeat as i wouldn't be without them now ,they are lovely and warm ,the soles are so thick so are really comfy too
i got the ones you can ride in because they looked like they had better grip ,even though i promptly swore i would never ride in anything as chunky as them

i rode in them yesterday :o as i couldn't bare to take them off and put my cold boots on and they were fine ,didn't feel clumpy at all
i just made sure my stirrups were big enough as they are slightly wider than normal riding boots

so despite still not liking the look of them ,i would not part with them and can highly recomend them :D

Second vote for Aigle, I will never buy Hunters again. I have the neoprene-lined Aigle Parcours and they are toasty warm, might be a tad bulky for riding though.

Definitely not Hunters. Mine split today in the same place as my previous three pairs. I know they're now made in China but I guess I hoped I'd come across a good pair ....... never again.

Hunter Balmorals all the way - neoprene lined. I am a convert as always disliked all wellies, not sure I would ride in them - chunky sole. To ride & keep warm & dry it has to be the Muckboot - Tyne!

I was a fan of Muck Boots and was on my 3rd pair which have just split again aaagh, so I bought a pair of Ariat Mudbusters and dont like :(:(:(
Ive put up with them until they were found floating in the tack room after the pipe burst and are soaking wet, so got trusty split muck boots out again :D:D and Ive missed them that much Ive just bit the bullet and ordered a new pair of Tynes. Cant wait for them to arrive :D:D:D Warm toasty feet

I'd be tempted to give these a go, but if they're going to split regularly then I'd be no better off than with my bogus Hunters. Is it too much to ask for these manufacturers who charge megabucks for their goods to make quality merchandise????

I loved my tynes (all of them!!) but they kept splitting where the sole and footpart join on the left foot!! Had 5 pairs that lasted from 2 months to a year. Gave up as the last pair lasted 2 months. Tried Mudbusters in August and returned them in September as they too had split!! I'm on my second pair of Toggi Wandered Plus boots. I too have a 'shapely'(!!!!) calf and find the gents ones longer and wider. I do ride in them but find they lack a little support around the ankle for short stirrup work. But they still are a lot neater than other wellies (not as good as the tyne). Most of all, the 1st pair I had lasted nearly 2 years. Very warm and comfy but a little pricier than some others - around £70. I'm a size 7.5-8 and have a calf 17.5" and can tuck my jeans in fine. If you are not so 'shapely' in the calf as me then the ladies may do fine.

My muck boots seem to split on the seam at the back. I do wear them to death though. I suffer from cold feet and they seem the only wellys that keep my feet warm. I got nearly 3 yrs out of the first pair which is great, then it was a pair a year.

I've had 2 pairs of hunters and they've stood up well - have just worn through from riding! They are soooooo cold though!!!

Now have some Toggi Canyon boots - not much warmer!! Why are my feet always so cold!!??

I have toggi wellies, they are fantastic. really comfy and actually fit the arch of your foot unline most wellies. Iv never ridden in them, i dont ride in wellies

Ditto

Toggi Lady Wanderer Plus (the plus bit is important!) - neoprene lined, great if you have larger calves.

Well I have tried every wellie known to exist and they all split after a short while...probably through too much use as a walk to my horse in them every day on the roads twice a day and I dont thing the plastic is good enough for such use. So I have bought some Rigger boots as they are made of much more durable materials and designed for use on builders yards etc. They have steel toe caps and so far they are doing a fab job!

What is it about wellies splitting? Have found all makes have gone sooner or later but reckon it has a lot to do with mucking out and being in contact with horse poo/wee.

Anyway, have found all the Muck Boots good and just bought a pair of Derwent because they have thicker, grippier soles. They are fab, I've kept my (split) Tyne ones for riding in bad weather they just aren't up to paddling anymore.

A man who made wellies told me every now and then to wash the wellies then spray them with furniture polish (Mr Sheen), apparently this puts a film on them.

I had 3pair of Hunters and agree they split and are very cold. I've now got some Ariat wellies and they are so warm and comfy, deffinately buy them again.

I work at an agricultural college and wellies comes up a lot in discussion (along with tractors...) and the boot of choice among agri students rank as follows:
1) Le Chameau
2) Aigle
3) Argylls
4) Hunters
