I have recently bought a rising two year old cob, could any one recommend what feed I could give him or point out where I am going wrong as I feel like he's always hungry, he is turned out all day then in on the night ( yard rules and will be 24/7 turnout for summer), I currently give him a half a scoop of happy hoof and half a scoop of grass pellets (one feed split into 2), there's not much grass out there and he also has 2 hay nets a night

He really just needs hay and perhaps a mineral supplement/ balancer. He should always have hay left over in the mornings. Soaked grass nuts and happy hoof are fine if you want to keep giving him a feed And I definitely would not be increasing the quantities of those.

If he doesn’t have hay left over in the mornings then he needs more hay. Horses are generally always claiming hunger, especially cobs!

Absolutely agree. At his age unless obese, you need to increase hay intake, as though the grass is growing, there isnt enough on it yet.

A 14hh pony which was lean when arrived one December cleared over 30lb ?15kg every night between 5pm and 6am for nearly 2 weeks. I was putting in 40lb of hay every night to ensure she didn't go hungry. Also then hoovered up another 10lb of hay whilst out.
It took a while to level out the hunger but till then I was throwing about 2 small bales of hay at her over 3 days just at night.

I am a fan of suregrow balancer there are others but hay and grassnuts with suregrow are what we raise our baby highlands and welsh on, we use grass chaff instead of happy hoof thoughferal pony.jpg

Nothing to add to the above as the other posters have much more experience with youngsters than me, but just to chime in, I have an almost-yearling and 3yo out together and they have been getting through nearly 2 small bales a day (depending on size of bale, obv! mine are not terribly large) between them over the winter. They have access to it day and night and often pop in during the day for a forage top up as the grass is pathetic at the moment. I'm noticing they have not been clearing it up over the last few days so the grass must be improving but i'm still offering plenty.

I also give them suregrow in some grass chaff.

My rising three year old gets 2 feeds of

500g of suregrow balancer over two feeds
1 x round scoop of soaked mixed grass/alfalfa/beet pulp pellets in each feed
200ml of linseed meal per feed
1 x round scoop of readigrass

18/20kg of hay over the course of the day

He looks like this currently not fat but not thin.
