I've been trying to find a standard neck 100g rug for my welsh cob and am losing the will to live, I cannot find a suitable rug anywhere!!
I won't buy another masta after having a couple of them disintegrate after one winter. I bought a rhinegold one cheap online, and it's a lovely rug, but seems warmer than his mediumweight- very thick filling and he's too warm in it. Got a shires tempest rug to try on today and it comes down to past his knees, even though its a good fit everywhere else.
I was hoping to not spend more than £60-70 on it, and ideally looking for a well-known brand that I can buy and try on from a saddlery, rather than online where I would have to pay to send it back.
His old one is a weatherbeeta freestyle, and has lasted years but I bought it when he was 3 years old, and he has outgrown it. The new style weatherbeetas look to have huge tail flaps, and he hates long ones that flap in the wind- I find him in the field repeatedly bucking on the spot! If it was a cheap rug I would happily cut the tail flap off entirely, or get the sewing machine out and shorten it, but I don't really want to pay loads of money for a top of the range rug and then ruin it with my dodgy sewing skills!
Does anyone know a good rug I could try next, or if anyone has a sale on??
Thanks :)

I have the new weatherbeeta premier trio and tbh I haven't found the tail flap to be any bigger than my old 100g weatherbeeta freeystle. What about buying a 100g liner from weatherbeeta or shires and putting it under a lightweight?

What about Saxon? Cheap, not too long/deep, mine had pretty stingy tail flaps, and they sat well. They're the cheapy range for another brand (I think it might even be weatherbeeta) - I have had a couple and liked them. They aren't the toughest rugs (although mine did fine) but I found them good value for what you pay.

ETA: it is the budget weatherbeeta!

keep an eye on ebay would be my suggestion, I got a rambo supreme for my welshie 100g + 300g liner for £40 a few years ago, still nothin wrong with it.

I have a Shires 100g combo for my boy and have just bought the Shires 100g standard neck for him, I got it from Ebay, it was around £50 with postage. I like the Shires rugs, they seem like they're good value for money

The Derby House Pro rugs. They have been brilliant for my big shouldered boys.
But make sure you look at the Pro. They are the 1200d ones.

I’ve just bought a new comfort weatherbeeta after my last one disintegrated and I love it, nothing else fits as well. Doesn’t throttle him at the chest, padded each side of the wither so no pressure and tail flap is large but well anchored so doesn’t flap. Binning off all my other rugs for these. Been waiting ages for weatherbeeta to bring a 100g no neck out again without all the liner system stuff!

I have a 100g no neck Ruggles and a 100g older style weatherbeeta full neck (the navy ones with red piping). Pony practically lives in the Weatherbeeta but as much as I like the fit and quality of the Ruggles, it seems as warm his 200g rug so he doesn't wear it much.

Should add daughter bought a Weatherbeeta Comfort 100g and sent it back as it leaked around tail flap and places where the leg straps were stitched. May have just been a duff one as no one else seems to complain about them

What about a gallop 100g rug? I bought one for my retired pony and it came up true to size, fits well. Not oversized on the tail flap. Has d rings should you want to attach a neck at a later date. I have 100g weatherbeeta combo on my other pony and it does fit lovely and you can see it's a higher denier but neither are particularly rug rippers.

Rambo Original 100g has to be the best. It comes with loops for liners and hood if you wish to add more warmth. Last for ever

my ruggles seem a lot heavier than others of the same fill.
they are a good fit, i would say a 50G is more like a 100g.

I have brought a shires one which im happy with, its a lot lighter and thinner :)

My Amigo's have always done the job, though with my new creature I've stuck with having a no-fill Amigo Mio on top with a 100g stable rug, does the job well and Mio's seem to stand the test of time whilst being a good fit.

I have a 100G Rhino Wug - it's onto it's third winter and is going strong. Seems a really nice fit on my cob gelding, who lives out 24/7 in a large herd.

We have our pony in a John Whitaker 100g turnout and I like the cut of it, reasonable price too. He has managed to rip the back seam BUT he is extraordinarily tough on rugs as plays with our bigger gelding constantly. It has been water-tight throughout rain and snow.

I have 2 gallop 100g rugs they were only £35 and have been pretty good there not as long as the tempest rugs as I have them as well they do tend to come up long so I go down a size for my 2

I’d recommend the website equine essentials direct, they sell loads very cheaply but great quality! Also have a look on eBay as there are always plenty of good deals on there

Ooh, I haven't seen a John Whitaker rug, can I ask what sort of length the tail flap is? Does it make much noise in the wind? I can't seem to find any close up pictures of the tail flap online!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, will have a look :) I have previously had shires rugs for my other horse, and they fit lovely, but think these have always been the highlander range, not the tempest. I wonder if it is the different style of rug that makes it a different fit, or if Shires have changed their design slightly? I haven't bought one for at least 5 years, if anyone has a newer highlander can they let me know if it comes up deep?

I like the Shires ones too, but they've started putting twist fasteners on the chest of the Tempest 100g rugs (like a crossover belly strap fastener) which bend and snap easily, so make the rugs not worth buying anymore.

Do the Highlander 100g have proper buckle fasteners?

Ps, I have Highlander 300g rugs and don't find them a different fit to the Tempest.

I've always found shires fit my D nicely have a lovely 200g one from Hope Valley saddlery that I got him last year that he's in at the moment looks like they have a few lightweight ones on there atm?

The combos of any rug look gorgeous but the Velcro on the neck scares him so he won't wear them 🙄

Yes the highlander ones have buckles on. I've always found them an excellent fit on my other horse, but if the highlander is the same fit as the tempest, looks like its not going to fit the welshie :( Shame, because like everyone's said, they're good value.

The thing with the WB tail flap is it is sewn down quite a bit so I'd be surprised if it flapped in the wind?
Swish Equestrian did a 100g (it was a while ago I was looking at them) that seemed good quality. I ended up buying an Amigo Bravo 100g. 1200D outer, nylon lined and loops for liners if needed. And a standard tail flap! Mine is pretty much always naked so this is what she gets in the worst weather's. It's a couple of years old now but I had no complaints with it.

You can always sew a tail loop to the underside of your turnout rug tail flap and put his tail through it to anchor it down so it doesn't flap so much and upset him. If he turns his bottom to the wind it will keep him dryer too.
