My mare always comes in from the field and rubs her bum against the wall lengthily and with great relish. The top of her tail ends up looking like the proverbial bog brush within minutes

As it's a summer problem, I think it's probably due to irritation rather than pin worms. She's not in much during the summer so it's not much of a problem until now. Now.... when it's still summer(ish) and she's starting to come in at night. I was thinking of trying Benzyl Benzoate as I'd read good reports, but I also read that it really needs to be used from the start of the itchy season, not at the end.

I've bathed her tail and it's clean but is there anything I can apply to her dock to help stop her rubbing it because it itches? Calamine? Itch Stop? Something else?

I used deosect on my boy to make sure there weren't any nasties on him, it helped, but not 100 percent, I think he enjoys a good scratch too much! I just purchased an anti itch spray for my dog who suffers a lot from itchy skin from chemists direct, and this seems to be helping her, I am also just about to put her on sulphur tablets, which help to cool the blood and combat itching, and am considering looking into this for ben if he gets too persistant because he is itching against the wooden wall in his stable and its not looking too good! LOL! But I also came across a rubber itching pad that can be fixed to a surface, I think i saw them on robinsons website but they were out of stock so I just did a little search and came up with this site:http://www.jumpswest.com/barn_scratch_pads.php

Just a few ideas for you, you may find one of them works. I like the idea of the pad, to pop on the concrete wall because ben is in a field with electric fencing and doesn't get the opportunity for a good scratch out there.

Hi my mare does the same when she comes in. I use the benzyl benzoate, I have just put some on now. I didn't use it at the beginning of the season, she only started rubbing later in the summer but its worked 100%. I don't apply every day, I find its enough to apply to her tail 2 or 3 times a week and it seems to be enough.

My shire x does this too and he loves being itched right by his bum!! He is generally a itchy horse though and loves being scratched. We wonder if he has mild sweet itch but the vet doesn't think so. I think he just loves to scratch xx

Brewers yeast - much cheaper than all the branded products, and more effective. It's a bit late to get full effect from it this year, as it takes a ouple of weeks to get into the system. You need to start feeding it in March or even Feb for all-summer protection.

Meanwhile, Benzl Benzoate will reduce the itching.

Where do you get sulphur tablets from?

I have a very itchy dog ( has been fleaed) and what dose please xx

Hi, yes, similar, although we have a dog who drinks excessive amounts of water (nervous drinker) we have 4 dogs and only the 2 girls are really really itchy, and like yours have been treated for fleas, so we decided to 'control the dose of sulphur.

I bought mine from www.holisticpetsupplies.co.uk , the 30c tablets. I also bought a skin coolant spray from chemistdirect which was only a couple of pounds and it seems to have taken the edge off the itching while I am waiting for the tablets.

My welsh cob does this too. He lives out but when I bring him in before riding he is desperate to have a good old bum scratch. What I find what works well is tying him up straight away, giving him a haynet and giving him a good groom with a plastic curry comb all over but concentrating on bum and top of tail area. He loves it and it seems to satisfy him enough not to rub resentlessley! Also giving him a garlic lick gives him a distraction from itching. I also use a lot of midgeoff cream which is pretty good stuff

Cal-mag supplement.

I know it sounds odd, but my super itchy cob completely stopped itching with a magnesium supplement.

Itching is a Magnesium deficiency symptom in humans, not sure about horses. But the scurf and bog brush tail is now a thing of the past.
