Recurrent Tying Up (also in Vet)

Hi all, sorry I have not been online for so long and just popped on today to ask for help/advice for a lovely little mare I've got on working livery. She has tied up 4 times since she has been here (since Feb), all times after about 1 hour of working at walk - always hacking, very hilly work.

She is on EPSM diet, turned out as much as poss, exercised regularly, given electrolytes, we've had vet do bloods (which we paid for as owners didnt want to) results were problems with liver, but never got a reason for the tying up. When she ties up she cannot move at all for anything from 5 mins - 1 hour (first 2 episodes were about 1 hour, last 2 about 5 - 10 mins). I really want to find a solution for this mare as owners not interested.

Questions are: Has anybody dealt with a horse like this and can give me an idea of how I could manage her better? Anything I'm missing?

Has anybody used the product Equiwinner with a horse that has recurrent tying up episodes and has it reduced/elimated the number of episodes? PM if preferred.

what exactly is she eating per day?
Does she have days off previous to the tying up?
Are the episodes at the same time of her cycles?

My OH mare had a couple of tying up episodes which from bloods the vets concluded were because of a selenium deficiency. That was addressed and (touch wood) no problems since. She has her shoes off now and it made us take a closer look at her feed and because of the minerals in our grazing we have adjusted her feed. I hope that this should make any tying up even less likely.

Have the problems with the liver been worked on? If the liver isn't working properly then that would be a worry, and I would wonder if that could contribute to the tying up problem?

Sorry to hear of your issues. I dont have much to say apart from my mare fell ill a few months ago and we took bloods to see if we could get a reason for her being off colour. The results came back with high liver enzymes and high muscle enzymes. Vet thought that the tying up was nothing that we had done but was to do with my mares other issues of the liver etc.
What has the vet done for the horses liver trouble? What exactly has the vet said about the liver?

She is currently just on hay (there is no grass here as 5 months without rain!) and as she is not really 'in work' (doing about 2 hours per week hacking, in walk) and is a very good doer. Previously was having a handful of bran as a carrier for oil (100ml/day, up to 150ml when worked) and electrolytes and was doing anything up to 15 hours per week. Vet said no vit/min deficiencies and diet fine.

Sometimes she has had days off before the tying up, however as the tying up has occured after 1 hour of low intesity excercise, vet says this is very unusual, would expect to tie up immediately. You are right though, she never tied up when worked for long periods everyday, that is for sure. I do ride her regularly but I am not able to ride her for 3 hours a day myself! Maybe 20 mins if I am lucky, doesn't seem to be enough sadly

We have thought about it being tied in with her seasons but she covers her tracks well! Doesn't show she is in season at all, I've only noticed once that she was in season when she was all over one of the boys, and yes she had tied up a few days before.

She also has no back shoes (fronts needed due to amount of work done over the summer) and her feet are great. Blood test says vits and mins are ok. Yes I am very worried about the liver but I also thought the tying up could have caused the liver probs?

Vet prescribed LISIMIX and NEUTRADEX for liver, owner not bought these and are very expensive for what looks to me to be just electrolytes? someone correct me if I'm wrong of course! Vet thinks problem is lactic acid build up and so liver not functioning correctly. Exact problems of the liver, we don't know as this will require more tests. What did vet prescribe for your mare?
