I just read a thread were Regumate was suggested for a stroppy mare, I don't want to hi-jack so thought I should start a new thread.

Is anyone able to give me details about how it works and how it can affect a very moody, hormonal mare?

My Section A seems to come into season monthly and is very marish, she is also difficult with her back end when it comes to people she doesn't know.

Would also be interested to know roughly how much it costs (for a Section A) and if it can only be bought through the vets?

Any other details would be great thanks :)

I think it has to be bought through vets. It is basically like the pill and can be used to time when a mare is in season when sending her to stud. But it can be used to stop them coming into season altogether if it is fed all of the time, thus stopping mares being stroppy when in season. It's tricky to handle and quite expensive (not sure for a SecA though) so a herbal supp may be a better way round it if you haven't tried that already. :)

I have my mare on regumate and it has worked brilliantly. Before I started using it she was un rideable when in season. If you asked for trot she would tense underneath you and refuse to move. At present she is on 5ml per day. It costs me 42 pounds from the vet for a 150ml bottle.

Really? That's excellent news, I just sent in a claim for something else but it had a consultation for behaviour which had the Regumate on it, if they pay for that too I will be laughing! A month's worth of Regumate cost me around £86 (2 150ml bottles)

Our mare was being a total well...mare back in the early spring, we tried Oestress which worked well last year but it didn't seem to help much this year so we called the vet to discuss and they suggested trying her on Regumate.

The thinking was that if it made a huge difference we could try her on a vaccine called Equity which worked for a longer period of time so was more economical. Equity is very interesting, not yet licenced for use on horses in the UK, and many different opinions

On the ground it made a difference, she became like her old self again, but under saddle not so much, but it turned out she had other issues (rotated pelvis and under-run heels) that may have made her uncomfortable in work.

Insurance will not pay for regumate if it is for behavioral issues, they will only pay for it if it is used as a diagnostic for physical issues..... or so I was lead to belive by my vet and the specialist at the Royal vet college

If you do decide to use it,be very careful in your handling of it. It can have a detrimental effect on the female human reproductive cycle. Rubber gloves are recommended.

My mare had 2 brushing injuries caused by overreactions to geldings in next field. Stroppy in season, took to biting me during seasons, concentration issues. Petplan has agreed to pay out out for scanning of ovaries in case of endometriosis and regumate.

Porcimine Regumate and Equine Regumate cost the same at our vet! They are the same product, just the equine one has been licensed for equine use.

After consultation with my vet we tried regumate on mare for months trial and her behaviour changed drastically. She seemed to be in pain hated her flanks being brushed rugs on and her saddle and girth being done up.
Rather than keep her on a expensive hormonal product I had her ovaries scanned and marble inserted. She has turned into the most loving mare and is easier to ride and take to competitions .:p
This is the same mare that had bit me and started kicking out .I cant recommend marble highly enough it tricks her body into thinking she is pregnant her seasons stopped and all the pmt symptoms too.The marble goes in at beginning of year April and is taken out oct time when her seasons would normally stop.
She was also very anxious and highly strung she has improved all round and it has helped with her condition as she isnt stressing weight off anymore.:)
