Its been a while since I posted. I sold up for a few years and last year I bought myself a traditional cob. Im getting too old for sillyness and she is just perfect for me. She is 8 years old and has always been barefoot. Ever since I have had her she has been footy on stoney tracks. Ive tried fiddling with her diet which I try and keep as low in sugar as I can but not really seen much difference. So I decided to try hoof boots on front.

With liz help from hoofbootique we have finally received our new pair of vipers. I rode in them yesterday for 25 minutes. But they both twisted. One more significantly than the other. I have watched dozen of fitting videos but not one of them explain how snug the heel captivator should be, or how tmuch tension there should be on the front strap. I have emailed liz and she doesnt think it is because they are too small as the renegade website would suggest. I will be sending lots of pictures to liz today. But in the meantime could anyone who knows these boots give me a few pointers please?

I am desperate to get this sorted, cob in question is too portly for my liking and due to having a couple of months off over winter we are at week 3 of our fittening programme but her feet are struggling with keeping up with the required amount of roadwork at the moment so we have come to a bit of a standstill. We dont have a school so I really am struggling.

Thanks for taking the time to read my essay.

I have just had to get boots as my young boy hadn't enough hoof to shoe when he got footy behind. Liz is very knowledgeable but if you use Facebook there are dedicated barefoot/hoof boot groups who have loads of experience. From what they say, Vipers are the best. I bought Scoot as cheaper (a bit) and I have a relatively short trem problem, I never thought he would stay barefoot for ever - he is a fairly lightweight warm blood but as he is only rising 5 I was putting off hind shoes as long as possible as he is only in light work

Can't help with the boots, sorry, but do you fed a high copper/no iron supplement? I find brewers yeast essential for some horses too.

No I dont. I have tried magnesium but that made no discernible difference. She is currently on a handful of hifi mollasses free and a general all purpose supplment. I shall look into brewers yeast. Thank you

Thank you ester. Its a minefield. I wonder if they are slightly too long for her but I cant find any advice on how far back the boot shoukd come on the hoof

If they were too long I think the hinds would take them off or at least tread on them. I suspect you are simply not doing the strap up tight enough. I would ride in them, keep checking and if they twist get off and reposition and tighten a bit more and keep doing that. You learn with rennies how tight to do the straps and once you find it you get it and it is easy to always do that. To start with it is a case of learning how tight.

I recently started using Vipers on my boy's hinds. They fit very snugly - I have to bang them on with the heel of my hand to seat them - and then I do up the captivator what I would describe as snug as well. No movement whatsoever, including a 17k TREC POR last week in hideous sucking mud for much of the way. I wonder if OP's boots don't fit the hoof walls quite well enough?

So they gave them another go today. Sticked to walk. Did 4 miles and they didnt budge. Woohoo. Two things I did differently today. I tidied up her mustang roll a bit and did them up a little higher. Fingers crossed thats all it was. Tomorrow I shall try trot again and see how we get om. Thank you everone for your suggestions.

Vipers do take a bit of setting up to get them exactly right but once you have it done there isn't my much that moves them. I too got a parcel from Liz this week with a brand new set all round for my boy. It made me realise just how worn out his old ones were.
