Whilst out on a hack a short while ago, I met a lady who'd rescued a dartmoor pony, her and your young daughter rescue cats and had taken pity on an underweight old mare- as they knew nothing about horses I offered to help them out. I got a text a week ago saying she'd rescued another!

When he arrived /\

He is apparently 6 months old and was broken and ridden in tack... very underweight and with lice like i'd never seen before.

He was so lethargic and would not eat and just looked so unhappy :(. the vet is going to give him a jab for the worse case of lice I have ever seen- didn't even know it was possible to have so many lice! His coat was moving.

So cue the clip!... (excuse the attractive trousers- didnt fancy lice in my jods)

He was so good, apart from the legs so he's got half shaved legs atm,

He is being fed up, wormed, de-liced and and everything- trying to offer as much help as i can ! Vet coming out again soon to sort the rest of him out

ETA he does have a rug for night time when it gets a little cooler, as I used my fine blades on him
 
ewwww just the thought of all those lice has made me itch, :eek:
Have to ask though if the lady has no horse knowledge how is she going to cope with a young colt:confused: make sure she keeps him separate from the old mare:eek: not trying to put a damper on things but its easy for the rescuer to need rescuing in cases like this:o

Yes it is going to be hard for her as It would be for anyone!, I have experience with young colts and I will just have to do the best I can in giving my best advice. He will be gelded soon as he has anything there to geld- he seems placid now but hes anaemic from the lice and underweight- sure it will be a different story when hes a bit fatter and with lots of energy!
 
Charleysummer, you are a star! Lucky, lucky little fellow to have found the rescue lady and now you. Broken to tack at 6 months??? They should be shot. Please keep updating on how he does - and well done!
 
Lice.......dont get the vet out, use coopers.
We have used it on several lousy ponies (one being stiggy) and its never failed yet!
You do have to be religious about using it every seven days for a month, but at £23 a bottle its far cheaper (and actually works!) than calling out the vet!
Well done he looks far happier already!
Only thing I would perhaps say, is geld him asap. If he is to go on and find a home elsewhere, its the one thing that will be a deciding factor for anyone taking him on.

Coopers has been put on but vet is coming out anyway to help out :)

Can't wait to see how he turns out, he really is an adorable little chap with a great personality!
 
Was he the one advertised on Preloved? There was a thread a few days back, but someone took it off the site. It was advertised as 10 months old, backed and had bailing twine reins too, looked a bit like him :)

Well done to the lady that rescued him, and well done to you for helping her out :) poor pony must have been starving!
 
Ah poor little tike! Lice are not much fun can't wait to see how he progresses make sure u keep us updated! How can people neglect animals like this. :(

Yes he was on preloved! turns out hes much younger than 10 months though, an 8 year old was selling him :/
 
an 8 year old?! There was another one advertised for £45 apparently, though I didn't see the advert, advertised at 9 months old fully backed etc etc.... I wonder what the real age of that one is, seems like it would be the same sellers as I've never seen a horse backed that's much less than 3 years old :( Poor poor ponies :( If only I had the time/money to rescue one :(
 
wow ! well done ... I am sure he will soon pick up ... but those lice !! poor thing and brave you for getting stuck in .. bet you are itching all over after that clip (make sure you sterilse them haha)!

I am sure the vet is probably a good idea even if it is to advise on feed, worming and general health.

keep us updated - by the end of the summer I suspect you will have some beautiful pics of him in spanking condition x
 
What a good facebook page - but just a thought it looks like the pony with lice has contact with a lot of other horses - you may have to treat them all - not sure how transferrable lice are - you may need to check with vet. x
 
Poor little boy. Coopers is good, my own cob Nico was covered in lice when i bought him, took a while to get rid, never seen so many.
People who ride horses that young need shooting.

Yes, wasn't too impressed by the contact with other horses but trick/ impossible to avoid in the yard set up, they are all being treated !

The trouble is, if people keep "rescueing" the ponies by buying them from this seller, don't you think the seller will just carry on producing more?

I fully understand the kindness behind saving this poor chap, but I do worry that if money changes hands in cases like this, the cruelty is perpetuated.

sadly true but there will always be people willing to buy a cheap pony , it's one of those cycles that will be difficult to break. it's never easy seeing an animal suffer because of human greed:( and very few people can walk away after seeing a pony like that:(
 
Why are some people such *******s when it comes to looking after an animal :mad: if they can't cope they should have it PTS rather than it suffering, the older I get the more ****d off I get with mankind :mad:

Unfortunatly, just to **** you off with mankind even further- the treatment wasn't a case of not being able to cope- it was downright cruelty. Tacking up and riding a baby, not feeding it when they can easily feed themselves and leaving them to be eaten alive by lice. Sickening.
