Last winter I decided I had had enough of freezing cold hunter wellies so I bought myself two pairs of boots to keep my feet warm!

The first were a pair of Mark Todd Cook winter boots which I bought around November.

The second were a pair of Derby House winter mucker type boots for doing the mucking out etc. But I stopped wearing them in about March as they had warn holes in the soles and made a squidy noise every time I walked so am thinking about returning them. But they were mail order (what a fiasco getting them here in the first place) and with Derby House's reputation I'm not sure if it's worth the bother as they were about £50ish.

I loved the Mark Todds, really warm with furry interior but quite worn on the sole already but then last night the zip on them went. So that's about 5-6 months wear before a pair of boots that cost £110 have given up. They came from a local saddlery.

Do you think I could get replacements? I've never returned boots for this reason before but have seen a few posts where people have sent boots back because they have leaked or worn down?

i think its worth a try ,i bought a rockfish floresent jacket from derby house in november ,wore it to death till feb when the reflective strips on sleeves started to crack.
it was about £100 so i sent it back ,i received a brand new one about 6 weeks later :D
although it has arrived with splits in the lining in the pockets :( can't be bothered to return it again and i can live with split pockets.

i also thought the furry lined ski boots looked nice and cosy so bought the harry hall ones ,wore them for a few weeks (again hard wear but not in deep mud) and the linings started to fall to pieces ,it was made out of a cardbord type of stuff and just disintergrated :(
took them back and got my money back no problem

you've got nothing to loose ,i'd take them back :)

My rydales have given up the ghost very quickly, but they were so cheap off ebay (usually £85), that it's not a huge problem. The soles just kept coming off, I kept glueing them back on, then stones kept getting in.....urgh.

I've just ordered some toggi hudson boots as I was fed up of cleaning a full leather boot every time they got dirty. They say they are very hard wearing, so I've got high hopes!

Thanks for the advice angelish - interesting about your jacket at DH - I might try for another pair with them!

Also interesting about your rydales shysmum - I was toying with a pair of rydales to replace the todds if I can't get a new pair!!

I would return them and see what the manufacturers have to say, it's worth a try.

I took a pair of MH Sportive long boots to a local tack shop for repair when the zip broke after they were subjected several months of hard wear and abuse by my teenage daughter.
The shop returned them to Mountain Horse and I expected to pay the estimated ( by the tack shop) £15 repair bill. Instead got a pair of repaired (and polished :o) for free boots along with an apology letter from MH.
result = I will now recommend the company's products on customer service alone

So it's definately worth returning the boots :D

We had soles fall off cheapish pair of Saddlecraft jodh boots when they'd only been used for riding at pony club rallies & shows, the tread was still intact on the soles and our local tack shop Eileen Douglas were fantastic, ordered in replacements etc. However same thing happened to the replacements so this time I took them to Timpsons and had new soles put on...but the top of the sole came off the boot and we lost one so can't get them repaired again, so I actually think it's probably a fault with the boots themselves not being designed for actual riding, so I've given up on them after 2 months of minimal wear, not good!

I'd def take back to your tack shop, small shops customer service is IME usually very good.

I have a pair of Woof boots which have gone into holes under where the velcro does up, after only around 3 months wear - I emailed Woof Wear and they said they would replace them if I sent them back, no problem.

Whatever you do, DON'T replace them with Rydales. Mine basically disintegrated after less than a year of wear, and I didn't set foot near a horse in them either! They were only used for dog walking duties. Rubbish.

I had a pair of mountain horse boots and soles fell off, emailed asking for somewhere to get them repaired expecting to pay to have them fixed and they said to send them back which I did, they declared them faulty so sent new pair plus inflatable boot trees, unfortunately zip on new pair broke first time putting them on and as they didnt have any more currently in stock offered me the Richmond High riders instead as a free swap.
Can't thank them enough (esp as Richmond ones much nicer than the high rider and more expensive totally unexpected)
So worth a try am sure most have at least a 1yr guarantee

OMG gutted about the rydales! But thanks Spudlet!! Definitely good idea about taking them back to the shop (the MTs) they are a really nice shop so am sure they will help if they can - agree about small shop customer service being usually brill!!

My Rydales that I bought in sept have had the sole part off since dec, Ive kept sticking it back on. I did contact Rydale and they said if I think there is a fault with them to send them back.....

Ive given up with boots, Ive had a pair of HH finlay which lasted months before the zips broke, another pair of HH, they lasted a few months then started to leak so I sprayed them and a few months later the zip broke.

I then bought a pair of Rydales and the sole has continued to come away since dec and they have leaked days after being re-sprayed. A total of 3 pairs of boots in about 14 months.....

Im tempted to by a pair of Ariats but bregrudge spending that amount of money for them to only last me a few months.

I have also given up on leather boots, I mean I know most people say Dubarrys are the shizzle, but I don't have £300 to chuck at footwear and if they leaked on me, well, I'd be heading over the Irish Sea with a blunt instrument in my suitcase!:D

My winter boots this year were Woofwear long boots, they were ok apart from the fact that the legs are not waterproof so if you walk in wet long grass, you get soggy ankles:rolleyes: I ended up wearing my Hunters to go beating after having a nasty experience with a puddle that was deeper than it looked:p, my feet were actually warmer than I would have thought thanks to M&S thermal socks;)

I've been searching and searching for boots on ebay and in the shops for a week now, and tbh, most of the soles look like they'd give up if they were worn all day every day like mine are - just glued on. I did see a really nice pair of boots with stitched on soles at Farmway, but at £173, I'd not be wanting to get them dirty !

It has to be said, I don't think the Rydales are a "serious" horsey/work boot at all. Maybe ok as fashion boots. Mine were £35 off ebay, so I'm quite pleased they lasted nine months really, but certainly wouldn't pay £85 for them. Or £35 for a second pair, for the type of stuff I do.

Oh I am so with you on this!! Especially given the mixed reviews on them!! I have heard the Le Chameau wellies are a good bet as they really stand up to some punishment, but again, pretty pricey and I'm not sure how warm they are!!

You have a right to repair or replacement if an item is found to be faulty within 6 months. Therafter it's down to the discretion of the retailer who might refer you to the manufacturer but within 6 months of purchase your first port of call should be the retailer.

The average lifespan of a pair of boots owned by me is around 6 months, and they usually give out before this but I continue to wear them until they are literally unwearable as I am very tight and hate having to fork out or new boots all the time when I know they won't last long! Have tried numerous different makes, the expensive ones are little better than the cheap ones, they all die eventually! I am a groom so do wear them all day everyday in all weathers, mud, water etc but then they are yard boots so I would expect them to be able to cope with this! A very kind livery gave me some long leather boots she wasn't using which I now wear all the time, the heals wore away ina few months, from over an inch to literally nothing so had to have them replaced and they sadly now have a split in the back of one. I am glad it is summer as at least my feet shouldn't get too wet but will have to get something more waterproof for winter. Even wellies don't seem to stay waterproof for long! Maybe I will try sending my next pair to go wrong back to! Glad I found this thread :)
