I need something to hold my plaits better, as at the moment I use nothing apart from the bands. Just wondering if it would help with extra grip and hold and also if I helps to get tighter plaits.

Plait tight and practice, also don't have the mane TOO short. If you still have difficulty, when doing them the night before I use cheap hair gel (sparingly or its really slippy) esp on the roots, then plait, band the end, and sew the roll up. They've stayed in 2 days like that with no problem (I redid the forelock each day as I think it can give them a headache) and tbh would have stayed longer but I thought that would be miserable for the poor horse.

Just for the day probably don't need to sew.

I use it to tame my Welshie's mane.. it works well though I do sew my plaits in as I think it looks neater.

I divide the mane up into sections, put some of the spray on at the top and bottom of each section, plait and band at the bottom, and then sew them. They stay pretty neat all day. It is a bit sticky after you've used it but washes off easily.

If you spray it on and work through the mane a little then leave to dry slightly, it gives really good grip so it's easier to make the plait tighter at the bottom even with squeaky clean hair. I have useless hands and find it difficult to hold tightly to the hair and this really helps.

Me too MP! Although I find even just wetting it helps to plait. I've got the spray but only use it if showing when need em smarter.

I plait and leave them down the night before, put a neck on, and roll up in the morning. If I needed em to stay in longer I'd sew not band on the roll up bit but as my hands are equally useless I don't do that.

I bought this a few months ago, its great. Its quite sticky, but really works. My plaits where much neater and easier to do, that's on 2 very furry ID manes as well. I would recommend it.

just to be the odd one out I'm not such a fan of it. i found it takes quite a while in my mares mane to become sticky (I don't even use much) and until then its even slippier. I find it more useful if i rub a bit into my hands and then plait. I prefer just dampening the mane with a sponge.

I just use water and then once done hair spray it all. I don't plait the night before. It hurts their neck.

For those who think it doesn't:

A racehorse sadly died doing it's job and went for a pm. Said horse was plaited that day on race day. The PM revealed a lot of bruising to the top of the neck from being plaited for a mere few hours.

I plait for as little time as possible.

Blimey. Fascinating. I've always liked big puffy dressage plaits so do the tops fairly loose but tight at the bottom of the plait where it can't pull on the neck... always thought it must be more comfortable ;)

When you get a routine organised it really doesn't take long to do on the day anyway imo :)

I like the NAF stuff, think it helps keep stray hairs tidy. Don't use a lot though, just a couple of sprays combed through whole mane.

EKW that's interesting from the pm. I've started doing running plaits as it takes me 10 mins and I can do on day of show. I know I can get a headache from hair tied up, so makes sense really.

Poor horse.

Plaits must be uncomfortable, especially if tight. I plait on the morning and like MP, do loose at the base and tight at the end of the plait.

I use mega cheap hair gel :) have used plaiting spray but didn't find any advantage over cheap n cheerful.

A dirty mane is also far easier to plait and keep tidy.

This! We plaited the spotty hooligan up in the lorry park at a dressage competition this weekend, having dragged his mud-caked carcass in from the field and hosed it down an hour earlier. A combination of grease, water and a hint of left over mud made the best plaiting spray ever!

I use quicbraid-my pony has a wispy mane and half of it is mostly rubbed out, but this stuff gives me really good grip when I'm trying to make it look presentable!

Brilliant - but how do you get it on the mane? I have a wonderful image of you licking your horse...

Ha!!! It's not pretty and certainly not very hygienic but a bit of slobber onto the grubby hand and bang it onto the bit you're about to plait and job done! I do find that I get a bit of cotton mouth if there's more than one horse to plait!

I just use hair gel from the supermarket. If you dip your fingers into it as you plait up then it starts to get a little sticky as you plait which helps keep stray hairs under control and then once you roll up they're stuck down better. Much cheaper than specific plaiting stuff I find...

Cheaper but not as good. Especially if you’re doing it for showing and don’t want a dirty gunky sticky mane. If you’ve only got one horse it lasts for ages.

only if you plait ridiculously tight! If you plait properly it should be no tighter than a french braid in your own hair!

Haha, this and the washing breeches thread is opening my eyes to the horsey world :-)

I've never found hair gel makes it look gunky or sticky?
I think it probably does depend a bit what type of hair you are dealing with, Frank's is particularly wirey and I do sew in because of that too.

To me it’s like keeping using a New Zealand when we now have lovely lightweight warm rugs. :) But I grant you I don’t have a hairy cob type although he does have quite a thick mane which is weird as he barely grows a winter coat and his tail is on the thin side.

quite a few of the professional yards near me use the NAF stuff and swear by it and I have used it and rate it too. My only complaint is that it seem to come out in a jet but if you decant it in to a bottle with a more even spray I am sure it would be fine
