Good evening 👋

I have acquired an old Rice Horse trailer, needs a little TLC but always up for a challenge. I know they are not made anymore but would be interested in how I can find out anything about it. I have the serial number. The cone is fibreglass. There is a plate on the ‘A’ frame. It is very faded but looks like the Year Manufactured is: EYA. Does this make any sense to anyone? Many thanks

Reckon so!

Rice Eventers were good but very lightweight trailers, Rice build quality but built down to a weight. Could take 2 x lightweight 16hh horses. It was pre auto reverse, so to reverse the trailer you had to get out of the car and stick a pin in the brake coupling to disable the brakes.

This was mine, the earlier square front version, stuck in a queue on the M5.

What’s your plans for your trailer?

Good evening 👋I am responding to your question with my own question. I am in a similar situation and could I ask you for information whether you managed to find out how to proceed? Where to write and request documents? Best regards, Petra petra@henri.cz (Czech republic)

I had one of these many many years ago, it might have been called Rice Europa? Brings back memories!
I had a Rice front unload (Beaufort I believe it was called) that I bought in 1973. I saved up for over 2 years when I first went out to work to buy it brand new. I paid £520 for it and sold it in 1987 for £1,600. It was still in very good condition.

Was this the Rice Farmers’ Hunt model? Double floor, flat front, rear unload, floor length partitions, coir matting on the ramp....

Very swish, we used to aspire to the ‘Beaufort’!

Definitely an Eventer 🙂. Much lighter weight build than the Farmers Hunt.

Single floor.
Yes, the Farmer’s Hunt was hefty alright: neighbour travelled his prize dairy bull alongside Irish draught mare to the county show - two huge backsides behind the breeching chains, pair of sardines - but good as gold together!

I had one, it was the bees!! Horses travelled so well in it and it was lovely to tow. I sold it for way more than I paid when I upgraded to a TK :)

There was a specially reinforced Rice Farmers Hunt trailer more designed for cattle, it had its own name which is something to do with cattle, but I’m beggared if I can remember what it is 🙈.

Nearly bought one just for the horse, a lovely trailer, but it still has the old fashioned ‘put a pin in to reverse’ which in the end put us off in favour of a newer trailer with auto reverse.

The trick was to find somewhere you could just swing it round rather than have the faff of getting out. Until the day someone accused me of not being able to reverse it, and after that I damn well did :)

I was amazed to see there are still some for sale. Loved ours which was the front ramp unload one.
We also then moved onto a TK.

I do remember the pin in bit. Had forgotten that.

This is a very useful link

This is my trailer, I'm not sure if it's a Richardson, I suspect it's a Bahill.

Looks very nice, but I don’t think yours is a Richardson, different panelling.
Richardsons also have a rosette badge (Rice had a horseshoe emblem), and a sweet little label inside stating who built yours, altho could have worn off.
Mine, a Supreme Ultra, was built by a Peter Gregson, who wasn’t actually working the day we picked it up, but if anyone knows him(?), deserves a big hug because it’s always been brilliant - from day one.
(Rice Richardson, Main St, Shipston by Beningboro, York, sadly no longer manufacturing)

Was it really 🙈? After I led everyone up the garden path insisting that it was a cattle related name
Oops.

Have you got a pic of the trailer, I can’t find it on FB marketplace.

This was my name seeking thread.

Where do I collect my prize please [post 66] 🏆😊

Oh sorry, I didn't find the other thread when I searched for whatever terms I used earlier - I remember there was a thread devoted to it now, I clearly got to the party a little late given that at least one other person provided the word long before me!!

Stock IS a cattle related name, farmers call cattle trailers stock boxes.

Miriam-Webster's definition of 'animal stock' is: animals kept or raised. especially : farm animals kept for use and profit.
In other definitions it does especially relate to cattle.

We've also got terms like stockman - a person who looks after livestock. I guess 'live' has been dropped over the years for some terms.
