Following on from the two birds thread, to those rich people on here - what do you/your OH do for a living?

I am classing rich people as those who have their own land/multiple horses/nice car and wagon and don't need to eat rice for the week before payday....

Just wish to reiterate - there is NO jealousy or judgement. If you are living the highlife - then good on you!....I'm just interested on what jobs pay well.

Some of the wealthiest people I know are
- save every penny
- never indulge themselves
- drive ancient old cars
- live in big old cold houses
- wear ancient clothes
- never throw anything away, food included

Basically, it seems that they don't care about status or symbols, and simply spend enough money to 'get by'. A memorable example is of a family friend offering my mum some salad dressing (this was in about 2003) that had gone off in 1987, but she was still using it on occasion.

;)

I'll answer for my dad seeing as he's the one with all the money :p

he's a quantity surveyor in dubai and has his own company, which has done work for the airport (he built the emirates terminal :D) and palm island.
to be fair, there were times when he couldn't afford to pay his staff and we went without so they got paid something.

I know an accountant who makes a lot of money, I wish I paid more attention in school.....working with horses is definately giving me the money that I need... Lol

I'm an accountant and I have to choose between buying shoes for my horse and shoes for me....

I'm by no means scratching around but I can't have everything I want (i.e. I want a new horse and transport but definitely can't afford the initial outlay or maintenance for both, probably not for either actually!)

This is most definately us! Well, more me than him, actually, but he does try......We run our own company providing historical consultation and services to the film and TV industry, live demonstrations (including horses) of historical skills, and manufacture of reproduction historical artefacts and clothing. Despite what you might think, this is bl**dy hard work and not even slightly glamorous! Been working 7 day weeks for close on 17 years now, havn't had a holiday yet.

My dad and former step-mum are pretty loaded (unfortuantely I don't really speak to my dad so not holding out for any inheritance LOL).

In my former step-mum's case (we are still very close) she works all the hours god sends in the finance industry. Even when we speak on the phone on Sunday nights, she's at her desk. She has her own company and works from home so at least she's not slaving to make someone else rich. She completed her MBA quite young, accumulated a scotch of other qualifications and went out there on her own. I really admire her drive, and she has an exquisite home, luxury cars in the garage, takes cruise holidays all over the world etc, but she works her butt off to pay for it. I wouldn't trade my life for hers.

My dad is also in finance. Again, he works very hard and puts in very long hours. He and his new wife have a few properties between them and both drive very nice cars and travel quite a bit. Personally, I think his job is unutterably boring and if I did it, I would probably lose the will to live. But it pays the bills.

This.

My OH earned his money working 120hour weeks in wall street before coming to London and pretty much doing the same here (although the hours got less as he moved up the ladder). He studied hard at school/uni, got scholarships to Harvard as well as being a super brain when it comes to maths!!

I was lucky enough to have him fall in love with me. Probably because i'm not a snob and don't really care about material things!! Neither of us have to work although we both dabble around in a few things (I dabble in painting and he dabbles in owning companies lol) I'd be with him even if he was poor though. He's the best person iv'e ever met in my life, we are very lucky but we don't take anything for granted.

Ooh, from the OP's first description I am classed as 'rich'! Well, maybe my family are....
We have our own land but this was bought over 20 odd years ago from money left to my mum from her mother when she died. We had a pony on loan, took on another from the Blue Cross (with his donkey pal) and then we sort of started 'collecting' horses but never spent a lot of money. Currently we have 5 horses but 3 of them are 20+ yo. We have a wagon - this is our 4th wagon, we got our first as my pony couldn't travel in a trailer so we bought a very cheap, banger of a pony box. Got rid of that after a few years (well technically it killed itself when it's handbrake went and it threw itself down our field hill and crashed into a tree!). We don't have fancy wagons though and, to be honest had it not been for the pony not travelling in a trailer we'd have probably just got trailers instead.

My mum, sister and myself share the horses and without livery bills it's obviously cheaper (I couldn't afford a horse if I had to pay livery). I have a decent enough car, bought a house last year so I suppose in some people's eyes I am doing ok. However, I have worked since I was 15 (save for a break for uni) and have to work 9-5, 5 days a week in an office job in order to pay for everything and I still never seem to have any spare cash.

I don't have much of a social life though if I am really honest and am lucky to get away on holiday once a year and very rarely buy new clothes.

My dream would be to win a few millions on the lottery, give up work and buy a small estate with lots of land. Well, a girl's got to dream........!

I think bankers still get hefty bonusses.
Solicitors seem to charge alot.
Any job where you can claim expenses seems to work.

I know a fair few rich people. They tend to be tight. They tend to be stressed and don't seem very content............However I would like to experience being very rich, just to see if it makes me mean and stressed and miserable!:)

Unless you are really talented you just have to work really hard, do you job as well as you can, be brave and take opportunites when they come and accept and learn from any setbacks.

There is an old saying 'the harder you work the luckier you become' .... it says it all for me.

From your original post that would make me rich .... however, I'm certainly not! Have own place with land/arena, 4 horses, 27 chickens, 4 cats and a dog, a lorry (though only an M reg we rebuilt ourselves!)

To pay for it we both work full time, I also do every other week on 24/7 call (IT), get up at 4:45 M-F to get time to do the horses before work and rarely eat before 9pm in the evening before going back out to do horses (to save so much mucking out in the mornings!)

We rarely go out, have new clothes, I haven't had a haircut in a year

Usually have too much month left for money!

It doesn't matter how much you have the horses will always find a way to spend it ;)

I wouldn't class us a rich at all (I'm not sure what I class as 'rich') but like the above poster we have friends who are 'considerably richer an yow'/us.

My husband is partner in a company that works throughout the middle east but I met him he was a squaddie and took some pretty big risks and took all the opportunities that came is way and he's doing well. I am a full time mum, well youngest at school now so I'm currently catching up on 5 years of housework

dam it i knew i should have done accountancy and business management at uni rather than physio and now left with a degree and poor job opportunities!!
As for the person who said solicitors are rich it depends where you are and what you do, my dad has his own company but since the recession ahs had to lay off 5 staff and also had 6months where he brought home no wage at all and since then 9months has only bought home enough to actually pay the mortgage (they downsized in this time due to limited finances). However 10years ago i was in private school and had 2 horses i would sya he was well off before the recession but at his age he wont work for long enough to get back the same money.

I think it depends on where abouts in the company you are, I work for a bank and don't get a bonus, i did laugh one year (quite a few years ago when we all had more money than we do now!!!) a newspaper had written an article saying that the bank I worked for the average bonus was £3.5K, they had taken the total amount in bonuses and divided it by the number of employees, if only it worked that way :(
Expenses again I think will be cracked down on in the current climate, I work 2 jobs, the job in the restaurant has a few of them attending dinners etc, they used to get taxis, now they get the train!!!!

I think being crooked sometimes helps (but to be fair I really don't have the motivation to try and break the law and get away with it!!!).

What's the old saying 'How do you make a small fortune out of horses......start with a large fortune'
I would settle for not having to worry if I'll be able to make ends meet each month, roll on December I have a savings account with work where money is deducted from my salary each month and I get it in my December salary (got it spent already!!!)

we are well off i guess but i have always been taught to be thrifty so i dont buy new cloths or shoes just charity shop all my horse stuff comes off ebay and my parents made me ride for 8 years before i got a horse all of which have been 'clearence ponies' so to speak(ex racers and the like) My dad was an investment banker but tbh i really respect the way he has brought us all up because i have a pony and my sisters dont we just dont do birthday or xmas presents for me and i work and pay half of everything plus any extras like vet farrrier etc...

Well I'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination. However, my stepfather was an engineer and was very well off - had two houses, went on multiple holidays, etc.. So I suppose he could be classed as being rich. Also, I used to be a groom for the owner of Berkeley Homes (well his wife mostly) and definitely class them as rich!
