Pointless post really but Richard Maxwell was on our yard this morning, seeing one of the yard owners stallions. Amazing man and very nice too. explained everything he was doing and why.. really enjoyed it
 
I agree he is amazing. I don't know why he is not more famous, he deserves a following that some less effective trainers seem to pick up no problem. He revolutionised how I train horses.
 
Wonderful man but very self effacing so doesn't tend to blow his own trumpet like many
He is always evolving his ideas too so isn't dogmatic and stuck on a gravy train
 
Wonderful man who clearly really loves horses.
I went on one of his courses, he seems to know what horses are thinking before they know it themselves!!!
 
Wonderful man. Went to one of his shows some years ago. Totally laid back, SO kind with the horses, and very impressive. I seem to remember his getting on a problem horse off a purple on-edge milk crate - and the problem horse just stood there like an old donkey. I agree - why isn't he more famous?? Too nice, I guess.
 
Max, as he is known, is a friend of mine, so i have had the privilege of watching him work many times and my husband, myself and my horses have all benefited immensely from his teachings. As a horseman, he is amazing (my horses are like putty in his hands!), but what I like is that his work is evolving all the time,as he continues to be open and humble enough to keep learning himself. He is also a genuinely nice person, and a good teacher, being able to put you at ease and explain things effectively. I think for some years perhaps, and maybe even still, people think about him as someone to go to with a problem horse, when in fact, from what I have seen, he is really good at helping make most horses better.
 
Sadly he became a sort of 'off topic' on here after his wife kept blatantly advertising his services. I am sure she meant well and was only doing her best for her very charming OH but it was against TC's and was ,frankly, embarrassing to watch.

I also went to one of his demos years back and was impressed at the way he had taken so much from so many and evolved his own unique and effective style of working. Much nicer to watch than a trainer who refuses to adapt to individual horses.
 
Ive been lucky enough to have max work with one of mine who wouldve walked through fire rather than load, he was brilliant, my boy would throw himself to the ground or leap forward onto you before he'd set foot in a trailer gave Max a bit of a time, the man the patience of Job, was quiet, consistant, and by the end of the day my boy was trotting up the ramp himself. Turning and waiting to be tied. IMO he's one of the best out there :D

I agree, hes an allround, great horseman to spend time with

Are you perhaps thinking of Michael Peace. I can't remember RM's wife advertising but can remember MP's wife singing his praises.

I think he is a brilliant man. I have been to see a couple of demonstrations and I love the way he works with horse's.

I've bought his DVD, books, training halter, horseman's halter & 12ft rope a couple of years ago and have done a lot of his work with my mare, the results have been fantastic.
 
Me and my friend saw him at Your Horse Live and he was amazing :D

We managed to catch him afterwards and she spoke to him and he was so helpful :) I was too shy!
I once emailed to ask about prices and stuff and they were very friendly. They even said if I got him out the next day, I'd get a discount as he was already in the area. I was so upset as I was busy and I couldn't get out of it :( Hopefully he'll be back soon and I can get him out :D
 
Hello all, thank you for all your kind words....maybe I should introduce myself...I am Sam Maxwell. Max's wife and I promise you I have always found this forum very scary and wouldnt dare advertise Max's services. :-)

Although he really is an amazing horseman he does still fart and leave the toilet seat up. We like to keep him grounded.

Just to answer some of the comments...Max likes being who he is and isnt interested in selling his soul..once you get on that gravy train its very hard to get off and I think the oportunity to keep learning gets less. We are also great believers in there is something for everyone and that the way Max works isnt necessarily for everyone so we dont like to shove it at people.

LOVE richard Maxwell been using him for years now, does both my horses back checks etc and even used him for my sisters horse who used to rear excessively and this was her last shot!! problem solved in less than half a day. lovely friendly man love how he always explains what he's doing and why, also his staff are super helpful to get you booked in. definately not recognised enough IMO.
 
I don't know Richard Maxwell but I've seen he's doing articles for Your Horse magazine this month and has done his own demonstrations as well as Your Horse Live. But I'm reading here that the reason he's not more 'popular' is because he's 'too nice'. So do you become more popular if you're not nice? How popular 'should' he be? Popular enough not to be nice? And the farting toilet seats; does that make a horse trainer more/less popular/nice?
 
My horse was used in a demo with Richard Maxwell and he was bloody brilliant with him. I was lucky enough during the demo to ride his horse! No pressure! :-)
 
If I had unlimited finances (or lived closer ;) ) Richard maxwell would be the trainer of choice for one if my mares... I have always found his articles great. Enlightening and do-able for the everyday horse owner
 
I am local to Max and have watched him work his magic several times, he is a very good all round horseman.

I feel lucky to have him local to bounce ideas off of and talk training through and he is always very generous with his ideas, he is also one of the few that is constantly looking for new ways and new ideas rather than sit back on his laurels.

Sam wish you hadn't told me that.
 
I watched Max do a demo at Keysoe some years back. He asked the audience "how many of your horses don't do wind" (as in gales, not as in farts!) and did a very funny impression of a horse not doing wind. He did some lovely groundwork and loading, and the horses he used (2 or 3 of them, can't remember now) were all calm and he got them working happily and explained all what he was doing, step by step.

Always thought there is much to like about his work and his style. I have two of his books and the 2nd book clearly shows how he's developed new ideas and dropped other ideas and says why he's done this too.

And "Wonky" was an adorable-looking (but bloody glad he wasn't mine as he also looked very naughty and opinionated) young horse pupil for the photos in one of the books too.
 
Yes he seems lovely. I saw him and (I think) William at a demo at Your Horse Live a couple of years ago, and he was very impressive. I've got his and Sam's book to read on a trip I am doing next week - will be a good reminder about what to do with my 18 month old colt.
 
I first went to a Max demo about fifteen years ago and was amazed at how he had totally out of control horses leading and following him respectfully and happily on a loose lead rope in about five minutes, even past buckets of feed!
He completely transformed my relationship with my horse for the better by using his methods. My bolshy TB used to pull away from you and bez off or would not stand tied up for more than five minutes before he'd pull back and break the rope and just walk away. He became a pleasure to handle after only a few days and with continued handling as per Max's videos, he became a perfect gentleman.
I don't know if he still does "Learning Days" but I've arranged a few here in Yorkshire in the past.
If you can get about four horses for him to work with and you're allowed to sell a few tickets to other liveries, it does break down his fee to a more affordable private day's lesson with the man himself.
I found he never stops talking all day and it's all so sensible and logical bits of wisdom and it's just a whole day of quality learning.
Top man and top horse trainer.
