We recently competed in two classes, ridden horse and hunter type, in the 1st class ridden horse we were pulled in 3rd consequently moved down to 4th due to the ride judge getting in her opinion a 'poor ride' fair enough thats her decision no probs with that but the next class, Hunter type, the poor ride marks were carried on into that separate class which meant the ride judge refused to ride our horse again and as obviously his confirmation cannot change he was not stripped and run up so in affect our daughters horse was placed way down the line and they had to stand in line for 25min while the rest were ridden and run up and she and 4 others were told to leave the ring while the top six stayed in so in affect we had paid £15 for them to walk trot and canter round the ring four times and not be judged. I would point out we are not professionals and show for fun and traveling costs to us can be £100+,
We constantly read show secretarys imploring us to come and support the shows I do not think this is the way to encourage us to come back. In regards to the bad ride I would point out the horse was well mannered and did what was asked of him.
Can anyone tell me is this the correct procedure? or were we just unlucky.

My friend was about to suffer a similar fate, and as the ride judge came round she pointed out this was a different class and she expected her horse to be judged as if new to the show.

As a result, the horse went much better second time round and the judge was put in their place.

I wouldn't have given them the option, or if they refused I would have left the class and complained to the secretary.

Afraid its normal. Horse has already been ridden and given the opportunity to give the judge a good ride and didn't. Sounds like thought the horse did what he was asked, he was perhaps not as responsive or as on the bit as others. As for the stripping etc, again they had already seen him so didn't need to do it again

Some judges will chose to ask you to do it all again but most won't

Too be honest I wouldn't have a problem with it. I would have been more interested to talk to the ride judge and ask what I could do to improve it

I can see the point of not stripping a horse a second time. But I would always expect my horse to be ridden by the judge as each class is different and the judge may well ride the horse slightly differently in another class. Of course I would never expect the judge to get on my horse again if it was naughty in a previous class but then I wouldn't take it back in the ring that day. I also wouldn't let them back on it if they weren't exactly the best riders. I have seen some truly shocking ride judges and wouldn't subject my horse to them.

Take it on the chin. Every day is different, every judge is different and tomorrow is another day.

Yes that was my point we had paid to have the horse judged and was not given the chance to redeem himself and I would not expect him to be stripped for the confirmation part again but he had travelled in an Ifor Williams box for 3hrs without a break and possibly needed the 1st class I am sure he would have given the judge the ride he is capable of, But my main point is that if you take money from someone to judge their horse then you have a right to expect no less, An official tried to intervene and requested the judge ride all horses in the class but was rebuffed by the confirmation judge whose words to my daughter and the girl next to her were 'I am putting my foot down and there will be no 2nd ridden judging'

I was standing beside a judge I know and when I remarked that our boy looked a bit tense his words were 'yes but the one on top is not doing him any favours'

I know some judges who are quite dreadful riders but the point is that the horse should be mannerly enough to give a polite & responsive ride regardless. If I'm ride judging & the same horse comes before me more than once I let it rest on its laurels if it's given me a good ride, but will offer to ride it again if the previous ride wasn't to my liking.

I don't think that's fair either. I used to have a horse who really didn't like to perform twice. If she had met you Zebedee she could have unfairly been put above a horse which had only entered the 2nd class. IMO if you have paid the entry fee for each class, then your horse should be judged properly in each class. If you don't feel that you have been then you should complain to the show secretary. It is very possible that the SS will take the decision not to ask that judge back.
I have seen a horse put down in a Championship because it did not behave as well as previously (and therefore did not show itself so well), which is just as it should be.
