My eldest has a new pony on loan and being a big black cob,the poor boy seems to be a fly magnet. I've never known a pony attract flies like he does. Hacking was horrible,we had to take fly spray along and stop to reapply every 20 minutes or so,and he was still really bothered.

I bought a ride on fly rug in zebra stripes, and it is fantastic, the flies came near, but none landed on him,it was such an improvement, and he was so much happier. It was less than £30,so money well spent in my opinion.

that is great to see! - interesting that you say he is a big black cob as there is one on our yard who suffers dreadfully from flies, and my piebald is none too happy about them either … do you think black attracts the flies?

Yep,even horse flies didn't land on him.I understand that they hunt by sight, so a big, black horse is more of a target. I never had much of a fly problem with my grey or roan, so maybe it is true. We even took the rug to PC camp today, just in case, but it was cool and windy so not fly weather.

My field companion didn't recognise my pony intially last night when he appeared in his rug for the first time as they've only been together a few weeks so god knows what he'd think if he appeared looking like a zebra! Alien alert! :D I guess it's to do with the flies vision maybe? Compound eyes seeing things differently so maybe need solid colour/shape to attract them? Dunno but isn't biology fascinating :)

great news, I just got one on ebay but have yet to try it on. Will take it for a test ride this afternoon :)
