As my old stables closed down a while ago, I've recently found a new livery where a friend of mine rides. She loans a pony there, and her mother owns a horse and keeps it there also. We've always hacked with me borrowing her mother's horse; however, I may be loaning a pony there very soon, but have no insurance. Even to be able to ride one of the other ponies there I need insurance, because it is not a riding school.
My friend is with BHS and says their insurance is £18 a year, which seems implausible, but very reasonable! I need insurance over the next two days or so, but because we're very short on money, it needs to be cheap!
I'm not buying a horse, only loaning one, so I need appropriate cover for 6mo to one year. This is my first time, help!
Thanks,
Zoe.

BHS wont insure you if you are PAYING to ride a horse (including loaning I think)

NFU I think might do it.

However, loaning if a business transaction and this means most companies wont insure you....... i think (this is the problem I had)

I see, so is it worth checking out NFU? My friend may have had the insurance before the loan pony, but no BHS? It sounded like a good deal!
I'll have a look at NFU, thanks!

I'm with Petplan I think, cost me £80 for the year as I got the premium insurance which pays out a higher amount of money if you claim. It covers you for death, injury, 3rd party liability, if the horse you're riding dies due to something you did they will pay out, accidental damage of tack, dental treatment and emergency vets fees.

The BHS insurance only covers you for 3rd party liability and is £50/year. IMO those extras that other policies like Petplan give you are definitely worth the extra £30.

I was with E&L but after hearing several unhappy customers and them increasing what was a cheap policy over the years went from (£5 to £9/month), we cancelled and took out the Petplan policy which is much more comprehensive.

Sounds good, I've got the NFU to call me back because all the equine people are busy; but I've got my mother on the phone to Petplan. It sounds good, and it sounds like the livery owner would be happy with this so it's all good.
Thanks a lot!
Zoe

I had the same problem a while ago when the stables I rode at closed down

. There's some more info here at http://www.horsecover.co.uk/riderinsurance.htm and I've now got rider only insurance, petplan equine seem to know what they are doing and its probably the best policy if you ride but don't own your own horse.
