in your opinions when is a rider deemed too big for their horse ???
the reason why i ask is a 5ft 9 size ten lady on a 15.2 TB is this a height match deemed unacceptable ?

At a rough guess, sounds unlikely to be too big. It's possible tb could be very high withered & finely built, have no muscle & be either very old or very young, & rider very unbalanced, in which case yes, its possible to be too big.
It is possible to be too tall without being either too heavy or unbalancing the horse, in which case your riding doesn't progress as well as it might, but that's entirely up to the rider.

il go and see it then ; ) i had a criteria of 16hh plus but after searching a while and nothing suitable i have opened the criteria think it may be mind over matter and me being a tad self concious as a tall person!

hi i was thinking i may be too big not the horse i know what you are thinking i think hopefully not poor looking it is 8 and hopefully has plenty of muscle

I think it depends on the horses build and how the rider looks on them. Im 4'11 and a size 6, and i look just right on a 14.2 show pony (or so im told), so if its a tb type then she may look a little tall on him, however if the horse was a chunky cob she'd probably look fine! Honestly think you have to ride one to find out.

Go & have a look. I'm 5'10, mines 14.2, legs bit long but stirrups take care of that for jumping & don't care what anyone thinks. I've ridden a spindly 16h tb I felt too tall for & 14h cobs I felt fine on, just see how you feel.

thanks ladies its only fifteen minutes away so not a lot lost if its too fine i will see how it rides cant see me doing foxhunters but a BE90 capability would be nice : ) x

Well my lad is 15hh (at a push though he has a deep girth) and I'm tall 5'9. My leg is ok on him though I ride short and have picked up bad habits for being a little leggy on him. However my main problem is that my height isn't all leg and I'm long above him (if you get me?) I do think I'm tall on him.

I'm 5'2 and ride regulaly a 11.2 welshie and a 12hh datmoor look a little tall on both and couldnt ride proper dressage length but hacking length and jumping length are perfectly fine, I jump the smallest and will be jumping the bigger one when he is ready. Mine is a 14.2 connie and I have no issues on him for any thing we are suited on height perfectly. I dont like to much neck in front of me so tend to stick to ponies, go have a look at it and get some one to video so you can look back.

Definitely fine. You're a size eight! And same height as me! I am 10stone and a size 12. So you are well slim. Think riders in Britain have a bit of a thing for riding very tall horses these days. In the States, those quarter horses, admittedly strongly built, carry strapping cowboys. Same with polo ponies. They are 15hh-ish but happily carry a man.

Horses vary way too much to judge without trying. I've actually felt smaller on a 15.2hh cob than I do on my 17hh warmblood (I'm 5'3" and don't actually look or feel small on her at all, yet I've felt overhorsed on something smaller :o).
Always worth a try, I think feel is way more important than the opinions of others :)

thanks i just dont want to feel like a timewaster if i turn up and it rides small never know it might have a big stride : )

5'2, size 16, rode a 15.2hh TB (who was old as well) for 5 years. He was not one to suffer in silence about things like that, and we did it all together and had fun.

Assuming healthy, fit horse and reasonable rider unlikely too big. Only thing is may *look* a little tall depending on build of horse/rider.

Just look at WFP. As long as you and horse are comfortable and happy then why not and like you say nice and near so would be a shame to miss out. Good luck

I'm 6ft & mines a 14.3hh Welshie - carries me fine, I feel fine on him but I know I look a little tall & as others have said I've also picked up bad habits like tipping forwards & my heels are tilted up to squeeze him as my feet are level with his belly.

I think so long as someone is not too heavy for a horse then it doesn't matter how tall they are. I am 5'10 and a size ten and ride horses from 14hh - 17.2. I actually prefer riding the smaller ones.

I think you have to have a go! My mare was 15hh2" and at 5' 9" I felt exactly right on her - I was a bit slimmer in those days! H is 15hh2" as well, but much wider of course, being a cob and my leg is taken up much more - if anything, I wish I had an inch or two more (I do like to ride long, though). Although RI says we are a good match!

Watching others ride him, there are some little people who look fine and other taller ladies who look a bit small! ???

I am 5ft 10 a size 12 and i only ever ride 16hh plus but that's my personal preference, ideally 17hh+ for me but i feel anything smaller i am too big for :-/ i am however quite heavy for my size so this maybe a factor too.

I'm 6'1 and weigh more then I should but will happily hack out a 14.2hh. Got on a new one the other day and he didn't bat an eyelid and funnily enough his legs didn't buckle under me :p

Im 5ft 11 and 10 stone and ride a 16.2. I thought id look daft on anything smaller but tried my friends 15h Welsh D the other day and apparently looked fine.

i didnt feel too tall for it after all although i did feel i tipped forward the odd time but think tht was due to the fact it kept opening its mouth and wouldnt go into an outline consistently but in the end i could look beyond its feet flat footed with no heel to the point they looked turned up : /

I'm 5ft7, and marginally under 11 stone and I own and ride a conny x tb, just under 15hh (about 14.3 1/2)

It's not about what you look like, but how you feel.

Just for comparison, this is me on an old horse, 16.2hh tbx

I feel better on the 15hh than I did the 16.2hh
