I'm the kind of person who gets itchy feet rather easily- very much live for the moment mentality. I currently have my two at my own place, one ridden and WHW companion Sh-tland. I love it, it's real luxury and lovely not to have to trail to a yard or deal with the nonsense that comes with most yard but- when at yards previously I often got to ride/back others horses/ponies that were a bit fresh or young and I really miss that.
I miss having to keep my mind alert, having that unpredictability or having to teach and work through things and seeing the results. My ridden boy is a dream, 100% with most things in life and is a very laid back chap lives life in the slow lane(should have been a beach donkey).
So it had gotten me thinking about buying and selling- I'm petite enough to ride around stocky 11hh and above and the thought had passed my mind about buying something to bring on to be lead-rein/first ridden as I thoroughly enjoy the desensitization work and light schooling.
I was doing my usual online browse today and up popped a lovely little coloured gelding 3 years old and 12hh- handled but only used as a companion. Sounds ideal and working it out financially I would break even(all going to plan) I would keep him for 10-12 months have him desensitized backed and ridden away lightly for next summer and sell him on. - once checking when he turned 3 and how mature he was upon viewing!
But am I being ridiculous? I dread to think how OH would take to another animal!!
Pro's and Con's me....?

Do your sums carefully, from experience it can be extremely hard to sell a small 4 year old that has not been ridden by a child, I would look for a registered native that is 4 now that will sell more easily as a 5 year old, that you could take out and do a few shows with if it didn't sell straight away, you can pick up a nice sec a for very little money and it could give a much better return if it proved suitable as an M&M 1st ridden.
Pros you find a smart pony that is easy to produce and sells for decent money
Cons you get a sharp one that is never going to suit a child and you get stuck with it or let it go as a companion.

Do it! I've been thinking about a second pony today after swearing I wouldn't do it, lol. I keep losing my ride to my daughter!! She adores riding my Highland but he's just that big too big and wide, she's a tiny 5yo, lol. I'm thinking about a darty but they're so expensive and I doubt I'll ever lose enough weight to get on one myself, makes it a bit tricky/expensive if it needs schooling.

Not the encouragement I'm needing- going to have a chat with MotherofChickens... maybe save my OH heart failure! I don't think your anywhere near me Hipo or me and your daughter could share a little native hehe!

My gran bout me a 12.2hh brick outhouse of a darty as an unbroken 3yo gelding. They are very trainable, very intelligent but kind and do carry weight well. But a 12.2hh will be too big for Lead Rein showing so you would need a 12hh or under.

I need to find a rider for my shetland stallion to get him out and about at shows. The problem there is they rider needs to be 13yo and ring savvy! The couple of kids I had in mind bumble round the ring and think nothing of getting to close to others. You can get away with it with a gelding but certainly not a stallion! So my search continues!

I completely see the urge for a project, I took on 2 new forest 3 year olds 3 years ago now, just turning 4. As a project and to help owner who could not keep them. It was never a money making venture but the idea was the gelding would not be with me for long and the mare may be more long term. In the end, after a fun summer backing them, it was not a fun winter with 4 horses, while also pregnant and I decided to sell the mare after about a year as did not have the time and she sold easily, though for a bargain as not been in consistent work.

The gelding I felt too fond of! Still have him and he is now costing a fortune due to unexpected liver damage!!! He was always meant to be a temporary one

We did the LR thing with the most fabulous sec A last year, she just wasn't interested - it was all me! Bad Mummy pushing her. Sold her pony and swore I wouldn't get another one BUT she's wanting to ride mine every day which she's never done before...we're away in September so it would be at the end of the year anyway, we'll see how interested she is then in the cold and rain ;) I'm only small at 5'1'' maybe 5'2'' but a little(!) plump at 13 stone, I doubt I'll ever get on a little pony again, lol

I know a lot of people would shout at me for this but my darty - who is as big and as solid as you can get - would carry you easily! Maybe not for a days hunting etc. but he would go a hack, do a schooling session and showing classes easily. He is a big strong lad! But he is few and far between sadly! Most darty's have spindly little legs these days!

Send him my way ;) I feel huge on my Highland never mind a darty! He sounds just my type, do you know any studs who produce ponies with decent bone - I know a few of the big names but that's as far as my Dartmoor knowledge extends, lol
