Not sure I would lead off a bike though. I'd probably end up on the floor with a pony hightailing it into the distance!

He he, will probably get shouted at for admitting this but i used to always lead my pony off the bike, he was really good however when people cycled past on hacks he used to try and follow them!!! *rushes off to dig the bike out** i might have to see if he still does it!!!!

I alway led the horses in (down about 1/2 mile byway) as a kid off of the bike! Used to take 2 horses or 3 ponies at a time, but then the yard i was on as a kid was ace and really wasnt into the whole health and saftey thing (private yard not livery yard)

All true Irish Sports horses have to be able to ballance a crate of Guinness on their bums whilst being led from a bicycle.

I take mine to the field half a mile away from the bike. I hasten to add 'some'........ A couple are not worth trying it with, they're a bit special. Brought two up on Sat, blokey in front with one, me sat in behind with mad hackney. Must have looked a right sight!
The lane is single track with wide verges, we get off when something comes and pull onto the grass. Beats walking!

I'd be very very careful. Not sure what the Highway Code says about that practice but I bet it isn't recommended! If anything happened - and when you consider the thousands of things that can happen when you're just RIDING the horse - you could find yourself in a whole heap of expensive trouble.

I had a good friend killed in an accident involving horses and bikes. She used to lead her horse (1/2 mile) down the village road every morning. One morning - just over 2 years ago, somthing happened (no one is sure exactly what) and she ended up underneath a van and died within the day. So No I would never lead from a bike I know only too well what can go wrong. Hindsight is easy as we never considered it a dangerous thing to do. The horses were all used to it and very little traffic on the roads but when something does go wrong it can so easily prove fatal as in this case.

Why don't you just take down a bridle and hop on :/ That's what we used to do anyway, when leading horses about a mile back from their fields :/

And then walk back.....

People get hurts doing all sorts of things, its always sad to hear of a life lost.
But whilst I understand the risks I feel just as happy leading the ones I do off a bike as I do walking with them. I will stress this is a country single track, clear viewed lane. I wouldn't dream of going onto even the minor roads I hack on whilst leading. We rarely see traffic, and to be honest most cars when they see us, pull in and smile as we pass! As with anything you do, you need to assess the risk with a particular horse and make a judgement accordingly.

I used to do with with my other ned, one of the ways I used to keep him fit when doing road work, but he was sensible and obvioulsy the roads where I took him were quiet and well suited to the job!, not something I would go out of my way to do with any other horses, it would be quite dangerous with some

He used really enjoy it though, variety is the spice of life!

When I worked at a riding school we always used to cycle and lead the novices

Having said that I probably wouldn't do it with my mare, though I have lead her and another from the back of a tractor in the past :S :P

I think you are all mad!

One spook and you'd be pulled off the bike onto the floor before you knew it with either a loose horse or hooves very close to your head as you pick yourself off the floor!?

Nope not from a bike but have led my boy from an electric golf buggy!

The estate he is on is quite large and we have it for poo picking and getting about. Couldn't be bothered to drive the buggy back then walk back for him so led him from the buggy.

He was as good as gold and just wanted to get in for his tea!

God no, but thats because i cant ride bikes to save my life!!

The first time on a bike i fell off and had an asthma attack, the second i got hit by a car and put the pedal through my leg, the third i actually hit a parked car at the side of the road and i went over the bonnet haha, can you all imagine me leading a horse on one
