Just been told I need to have my gall bladder removed. Has anyone had this done - if so, how soon afterwards did you start riding? I know that because it will be keyhole surgery recovery time is much quicker and I should be back to work about a week afterwards but wondered if I need to give it a bit longer re riding due to it being abdominal surgery.

I would have thought so....but best speak to you dr/surgeon....

good luck though x

As others have said ask your surgeon but definately don't do what I did i.e. told to leave it 6/8 weeks but as I only had someone able to ride my TB a couple of times over a two week period post surgery, I started riding 2.5 weeks post keyhole surgery to remove my adrenal gland and a tumour attached to it (near the kidney). Couldn't get on/off without assistance but once on could walk for about 15/20 mins dosed up on strong painkillers.

Although externally the scars begin to heal reasonably quickly, it is the internal healing that takes longer, especially where a 'part' is removed. If your horse spooks you won't find it as easy to stay on and could risk internal bruising/damage to surgery site. P.S. It hurts more falling off as well, this happened 5 weeks post surgery for me when I was deposited flat on my back and daren't go to A & E to get checked out as I knew they would tell me off for riding!!

Good luck with your op.

Thanks for the good luck wishes folks.

Vetsbestfriend - thanks for the advice, will ask my doc what timescale he suggests. I'm hoping it won't be too long before I'm on board again. Sounds like your op was much more invasive which was why you were told 6/8 weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed its only a few weeks - especially as we're coming into winter!

Hey, good luck, you'll feel great once its removed!! I think I was 5 or 6 weeks but I got an infection after op so would have been sooner other than that. I wouldn't imagine you'd be able to ride in the first three weeks as far as I remember as was sore around chest etc - something to do with pumping you with air so felt winded - sorry was good few years so cant quite remember.

I had this done last year after enduring a few years of very painful episodes _ I was off work for about a week to ten days and riding about four weeks afterwards< i was driving after a week (i jumped up and down a few times to see if it hurt!) but all was ok> good luck and hope the op goes well
