I am getting a new riding hat for my birthday (which is today but won't be hat shopping until Saturday). My hubby is buying it for me, which is great but the money does come out of the joint account, so I don't want to spend a fortune.
Are there any that you'd recommend?? :)

At the mo, I have a regular Charles & Owen velvet hat, with a fixed peak and I do like it but it's starting to look rather tatty and it's a bit of a faded black colour now.
Are there any benefits to a skull rather than a traditional riding hat?? I always insist my kids have skull caps but prefer the tradional velvet for myself. :?

If you have a Charles Owen already, then I love my Showjumper and it should fit - nice comfortable leather harness - yum!

You should be able to find one for just under the £100 if you look hard..... otherwise you will get a velvet cap with a normal harness for about the £50 - £60 mark?

I had to stop using my Charles&Ownen Showjumper (leather harness, looked similar to the show one and people used to think it was a Patey) as it was a smart looking hat for showing or dressage, but then I made the mistake of using it on a regular basis for everday riding which then lead to Mackenzie grabbing in his mouth when I put it down in his stable one evening and he picked it up and sunk his teeth into it  which caused it to crack.:D

So had to buy a new one, I then just got a champion JS, but I'd like to have another traditional looking hat for best (dressage/hunting etc).

If you really liked your C&O and it fitted nice then I'd be temped to buy another, once you find a hat that suits you and more importantly fits, it's hard to find another that does the same. :)

Happy B Day btw!!!, take it your having a big spend at RideAway or R&R :D

i'm looking at replacing my everyday hat at the moment....i really like the look of the Charles Owen AYR8...i saw someone in one at a jumping lecture the other night and thought it looked really smart

Me too!
I saw Andrew Gould riding in one, and it looked really stylish. His wasn't velvet though, he called it "Leather Look" (it looks better than it sounds)...
I have always had traditional looking hats, so feel like a change.

Charles Owen helmets do vary in shape - I can wear the SJXP and the H2000 (though look a total mushroom head in the latter) but nothing else. I have a very oval head rather than round. I like the Champion Ventair the best but the cheaper option, and what I now have, is the Dublin Onyx for every day (nice as it's vented) and the SJXP for posh.
