Was just wondering this with a friend recently , I have fallen off out hacing , jumping , competing etc , quite a lot over the years , not to mention the indirect injuries that can be part of horse ownership !!
but touch wood , I have never broken a bone or done anything too serious , trampled feet , bashed head , general bruising , always land on my head and am fine !1

Fell off quite extravagantly at a xc event , horse and i had disagreement over direction to take to next jump, i fell off into a gorse bush , landed on my head !! lol , grabbed horse and was back on in a flash and off we went , as ppl were laughing and asking if i was ok !!!

nothing worse than when you have half come off , round horses neck upside down looking into their face , and then they just shrug you off completely , into the mud and trot all the way home!!

friends and family have broken fingers, toes, arms, legs, collarbones , had concussion etc .

But jus wondered , who has done what , broken which bones??? what are most frequent , common injuries whether just hacking or competing ????

obviously we all know horses can be dangerous and riding can be hazardous and especially competing , where horse and rider can potentially pick up serious injuries. when horse and or rider fall , rotational falls etc .

we should always wear hats, body protectors when riding , jumping etc .

bit long winded sorry , xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I have had broken toes and fingers, and internal bleeding with damage to a kidney.

touch wood - only ever broken my little finger - and that was just 'dismounting gracefully' my finger (with glove) got caught in his mane!! (felt such a wally, but it did hurt).
Always bang my head - concussion too numerous to mention,
I fell off at an event once (horse just clipped toe and I went out the side door) she struck my face with her hind studded shoe, split my lips/gum and the bit below my nose wide open! I thought all my teeth had been knocked out and thats the only thing that made me panic!! Blood everywhere, but I soon got stitched up and it has never put me off. (only a small scar now and my teeth were fine!)

Touch wood, nothing worse will happen, but you never know with horses, I like to think myself as 'brave'- but who knows!??

ive broke my foot because my shire (R.I.P) missplaced his feet on top of mine in boggy barn.

collor bone in doing XC, fell off well straight over getting on once because i bounced up to hard and broke my wrist shouldnt try to land on my hands really

lol list goes on and on but i wouldnt change it 4 world

i've been thrown off and trampled over but luckily a foot of mud helped absorb the impact, and i just got away with some rather impressive bruises! never broken, sprained or severely bashed anything-yet

broken toes, broken fingers,

cracked vertebra - I was thrown at a concrete fence post after an argument about whether we should be jumping the jump (my choice) or the horrid metal and concrete fence (Beanbag's choice) at gallop. at the point of takeoff over the wire (16yo girl weighing 8st vs 16.3 WB) he decided I was right, and I slid down the fencepost head first cartoon stylee... got on, rode home. 3 weeks later when still sore was sent to hospital.

broken heel bone - 5 years ago I fell off and landed on my feet, bruising my heel (i thought) but it turned out 6 months later that I had broken the heel bone in one foot. The sheet of soft tissue under my foot then went into spasm, which is what made me go to the docs. And I'm still suffering with it, as the break has caused plantar fascitis which I reckon is about the worst soft tissue injury as there is no known 'cure' and on a morning I can't walk down stairs and have to come down them on my @rse.

ETA - broken ribs too from a horse landing on me when we fell on black ice on a road.

Broke a fragment off my funny bone.... had to have it wired back in place.
Blacked out still on the road (apparently a lorry drove past - I dont remember that part!) and when I stood up, probably far too quickly, I was still demanding to be allowed to get back on the horse that was throwing itself around on the grass verge...

That was just going out for a hack one day and horse decided it really didn't want to! Thankfully we were right near home, there were no cars coming and she ran in the right direction (away from the main road!)

I've had concussion loads as i nearly always land on my head! The one time i didn't land on my head was last year when a young cob i was riding reared up and came over backwards in the road. I knew i had broken my lift hip as i heard it crack and my leg was at a very bad angle! I'm a bit of a freak though as i have a very high pain threshold and it didn't hurt. They would not believe i had broken my hip till they saw the x rays. The doctor then came into the x ray and asked me if anything else hurt. i waved my hand around saying "my wrist is a bit sore but i can do this". The doctor asked for that to be xrayed and it was broken too!

Earlier this year my bay Sammi did his superman impression and stood 7 yards off from a jump

! His front legs got caught in the poles, which snapped, the force sent me out of the side door with him flipping over, landing on me, and used my face as a boogey board across the paddock!

Blood pouring from my mouth, bottom teeth were a smidge from going all the way through my lip, all my ribs were brusied and had concussion....then...

July this year, sat on my friends youngster and it reared over backwards ontop of me and as it scrambled up, sat on me again. I sat up and my foot was facing the wrong way!! Hmmmm nice

Broke my talus bone in my ankle in four places and snapped my fibula which had gone through my skin!

I have a photo diary of my war wounds - got some corkers lol! xx

broken foot - being trod on
broken toes - being trod on
lost toenails - being trod on

I can see a pattern here.....!

also whiplash - I fell off and landed on my back, and cracked my nose too when he kicked my hat peak into my face
did something to my jaw - plaiting a forelock, horse threw head up and hit me under the chin
2 x broken ankles but not horse related!
injured rib - horse pinned me in the stable and kicked me in the ribs
torn shoulder muscle, and whiplash again - fell off x country and got my foot stuck in the stirrup, horse landed on top of me

I think thats it :-)

Touch Wood nothing but bruises and winding but most of the serious injuries my friends have had were when they were on the ground. So we should always be careful around our horses whether on them or not.

My various friends have -

Lost an eye when kicked in face by another horse when catching up.
Punctured trachea and fractured jaw when kicked in the jaw when hand grazing box rested horse.
Fractured tibia when knocked over and trampled on when loading
Broken hand when pulled over in arena.
Shattered ankle when another horse kicked out at hers when riding at a clinic.
Fractured skull bringing horse in from field and it got loose and she went to pick up rope and horse kicked out.

What a cheerful post! I hope I don't have nightmares......

errrrmmmmm lots of broken fingers, toes, various bumps, concussion, scratches and bruises normally from the little b***ers that make up our riding school ponies
smile.gif
Have broken two metatarsals thanks to stupid mountain horse boots ggrrrrrrrr
frown.gif
got headbutt by an arab who took exception to her girth being done up, my tb was titting about when he was lead file on a hack and I was so intent on sorting him out didn't see an old bit of ivy hanging down right at neck height so as he took off at a canter this vine tried to decaptiate me
smile.gif
looked like I have tried to top myself for a few weeks after
smile.gif
also broken two ribs when I put my old 17.3hh in his box ,turned to put his bar up and had it half in when he decided to come back out at high speed sandwiched me between him and the bar - winded me sooo badly I was on the floor and to add insult to injury he then managed to kick me up the backside when I was rolling about on the floor. Same horse also bit me on my forearm and left a perfect imprint of his teeth - he had bitten down so hard you could see the rings on the inside of his teeth on my skin.

im feeling a woozy just reading some of these !!! lol , some really serious injuries , bleed on the brain mrs M ,that doesnt sound good at all , recent too ,are you ok now ????

the lost eye , would be horrensous, My cousin lost an eye , not to do with horses, a tree branch snapped back and hit her eye , she is ok now has had a contact lense type implant ,

travelling and trailers/lorries always worry me , My lot are good ish loaders but my mothers horse had a bad fall in trailer years ago , she somehow fell down , stayed tied up , baler twine didnt snap , and she had her head /neck over the breast bar and was almost smuffocated to death !!

it was awful , we got her out and up she was fine , but i always worry about myself and horse when loading and travelling , had a friends 13hh pony as I was just finished tying him up , he leapt clean over the breast bar , and whooshed past me and out the front ramp !!!i was unscathed tho .

i like dubsie's cured back ache thats a good story . xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

T86 - they tell me it's okay now
grin.gif
. I don't recommend it, very (very!!!) sick making

. Blah. Mental note to self: when horse goes left, rider must go left also (especially at speed!).

Yikes re. your Ma's horse! Hugs.

trampled toes
broken fingers
cracked skull
displaced pelvis (and poss broken hip that the doctors couldn't agree on but by the time they did decide it had been broken it had healed and was too late to put straight)

I creak like a set of maracas these days and some days struggle to even walk.....but still have horses.

Actually none of the horse related injuries really register compared with the long term effects of a high speed car crash (not my high speed, that of the car that hit me head on

Until recently I'd managed to stay fairly intact other than some bruising.

However I went splat 6months ago and got kicked in the face, breaking my nose and dislocating my index finger, spliting the bone right down the middle. Nose has healed up fine but my finger is still very squint.

Sounds like I've got of very lightly compared to some people though!

Mmmm, where do I begin!

Over a period of 4 years and one rather self-opinionated and nappy young man rather a lot really:

several concussions (usually land on head)
broken collar bone
broken rib
chipped bones on elbow and both knees
broken toes/lost toe nails
trapped nerve in back (resulting in back of calf and three toes being permanently numb)
damaged ligaments and tendons to one foot

Before that one particular boy I'd ridden for 29 years and not suffered anything more than the odd bruise. Looking back I think I deserved a medal for persevering with him.

Broken Femur, from horse rearing broke when it landed on me then stood on my leg just 2 finsh me off.
Concussion and torn muscles/ligaments in shoulder from a fall. Broke nose from a horse head butting me. Lots of bruises.

I've only had one fall that resulted in broken bones. And then I broke my collarbone, the neck of my humerus and partially dislocated my shoulder. I was jumping a 13.2 bareback, which was fine until she bronced......

Have had lots of bruises, sprains, soft tissue injuries etc though. In fact more painful than the busted shoulder was a soft tissue injury to my hip, they thought I'd fractured my pelvis but the x-rays were clear. I had bruises so swollen I couldn't wear normal trousers and I had a walking stick for two weeks!

Broken clavicles (collar bones) is without doubt one of the most frequent horse related injuries. Unfortunately, it's also well known to be one of the most painful! I did it myself a few years ago now and ended up with a metal plate - and on the same day I did mine, another lady was brought into A&E, also with a broken clavicle from riding.

I also managed to break my fibula, just above the ankle, in June of this year, so had another metal plate added to my collection. Compared to the pain I went through with the clavicle, breaking the fibula was almost a breeze!

CRIKEY !! Thats alot of nasty injuries, although i have fell off a few times luckily i have not hurt myself.
grin.gif

I have had a few horse related bruises, and when i have fell off i have had a bruised ego does that count.

Not a long term injury but when riding a learner trekking pony in NZ it bolted with me across a road at full gallop, I pulled maybe too hard, his feet whipped right out from under him and we both power slid along the road on our sides with him on top of me - resulting injury, other than a lot of bruises and swelling, was that a lot of his skin and flesh and my skin and flesh was spread along the road! No scars other than to my riding helmet which was missing most of the outer casing as it cheesegratered along the concrete.

My new baby - 2 misaligned vertebrate, 1 misaligned jaw, 2 cases of whiplash.

knees. about 5 years ago, and yesterday, in my case. mega ouchies.
squashed toes, only ever bad bruising though, luckily.
concussions.
that's about it for 'common' injuries as far as my experience goes...
fractured humerus, ruptured spleen and punctured lung was my biggest crunch, i think. nasty.

When I was 13 - thrown into wall of indoor arena, luckily just grazes and one ENORMOUS bruise on my @rse.

April 2004 - Broken foot. Was out hacking, jumped a ditch, Dylan pecked when he landed and I flew off, I landed on my back so I assume my foot twisted in the stirrup.

October 2008 - Broken hand. Friend's mare kicked me, went to hospital and got told it was fine, they called me back 2 weeks later to say actually it was broken but it was too late to do anything about it - the lump's still there
