Riding two abreast - your views

We always ride two abreast no matter what horses we are on. Well most of them are highly strung and have the occasion to run into each other. Also cars do no respect you if you ride single file. Round bends especially we ride two abrest because cars can see us quicker.

We also thank people and when I took the BHS riding and road safety test they said they advised riding two abreast unless the traffic was seriously heavy because it is the safest way.

I suppose it is personal opinion, and the way you feel safest and what horse you are on and how you treat drivers and where you live

We ride 2 abreast in a number of situations.

1) when riding down the A road through our village (30mph) we ride 2 abreast. My pony is fab in traffic, my mums horse isnt good with big stuff, though we tend not to take her on that route during normal times (xmas only!) - I did get someone touch my whip on xmas morning though because they came past so close despite there being nothing else on the other side of the road

2) we ride 2 abreast on our lanes but not around the bends and not on windy day when you cannot hear any approaching traffic.

our lanes are one tracks so we tend to trot and place mums horse in the gateway with mine on the scary side to allow traffic past. All our tractor drivers and the local big plant contractor know us and know that we will get out the way for them and thats the quickest way to pass us.
