housewife and yummy mummy
i passed a women today out hacking and she wasnt wearing a riding hat , how foolish i thought, so as she approached, [ i was sat on my hor watching a cow being born in the field ] she said loverly day, i said yes but if u fall off and bang your head it wont be a nice day , she laughed and said i never wear a hat on my trusty bob, i just thought careless ,,, hmmmm

no how extremely dangerous!!! her horse maybe trusted but other things around her can cause accidents, ie.cars!! Plus u can never rely on horses they are flight animals at the end of the day.

i think if she completely trusts her horse then i would understand...ive ridden a couple of times without a hat....only on the farm though...but that is just my opinion.

Hmm an emotive issue!
I never wear a hat to lunge or loose school, or to do anything on the ground with a horse.

I now always wear a hat to ride although I have in the past occasionally gone without in the school on a trusted horse, and have sat on a few without a hat.

I have been guilty of riding my horses without a hat in the paddock at home in summer, it's my own choice but I would NEVER dream about going on on the roads without one.

There is a girl near me who rides her 6 year old 15.2hh horse up a main road at 8pm at night in just a head collar! No tack, no helmet! It's awful.

i didnt wear a hat to lunge etc, until flint nearly caught me in the head with hsi hooves, and i certainly wouldnt ride with out a hat now! although i have and have been dumped on the floor for it!

people like that never seem 2 fall though, i fell off onc in the road, wen a old mare spooked but i fell on my butt , well sort of slid off really, but i was ok, but my head did bang on the ground and i was fine but wen i took off my silk the hat had a chunk missing, the size of a 50p,

Nooooooooooooooooooo not the hat debate again!!!! I wouldn't ride without a hat but it is up to individuals if they do or don't, it's been done to death

I always wear a hat! Manly because I would have knocked myself out on tree brancehes about 8 million times by now if I didn't!!!

A friend of mine used to ride in a hat all the time, she came off one day in the menage and the peak of her hat caught the post of the fencing and said hat slipped up and the chin strap slit her throat open. Luckily we were stabled next door to a hospital and she survived, but has a nasty scar around her throat. If she hadn't had her hat on this wouldn't have happened and she would have been none the worse for wear. So Yes agree they can save your life there are some freak accidents where your hat can take it away. If I wear my hat I don't do up the chinstrap as it should fit properly anyway.

Yeesh what type of chin strap did she have that could slice through flesh??? Sounds horrible. But surely if the peak of her hat hadn't hit the fence, her forehead would have?

Sorry, but cazza's argument is like the drummer of Def Leppard(sp?) who lost his arm in a freak accident whilst wearing a seat belt. You have to put that against the hundreds of thousands of lives which have been saved when people have observed safety procedures. My daughter learned to ride at a local stables. The owner, an elderly woman, was a legend in her lifetime and an accomplished rider. But she always took rides out without wearing a hat herself. When I mentioned it to her, she just laughed. But, she used to take really young children out on lead reins, etc. I asked her if it was fair for those children to have to deal with the consequences of her falling off on the road and landing on her head! I never got a reply to that one. Always. always wear a hat, if only for the sake of the poor sods who have to deal with your battered body.

no dropped straight down, was kinda landing on her feet/knees. It was the good ole nylon strap. Nylon causes major friction burns and won't snap. Reason for not leaving a horse in a field with a nylon headcollar on and only a leather one as leather will break.

and it's the other taxpayers that will pick up the tab for her when she's a vegetable needing care in hospital

something that struck home to one idiot I used to know that did this - totally devoted to her horse - I asked her what would happen to her beloved horse if she fell off and got brain damage and couldn't ride and needed constant care ?

she went out a bought a hat about a month later

it is a reminder though to make sure that in your will you have made provision/decision for your dependent horses (and other animals) in the case of your death.

People are bad enough about making wills as they don't want to consider their own mortality - but tbh the animals left behind don't deserve to suffer because their owners are ostriches.

I agree that it is prob a good idea, but I would not have said one word to her. It would not be my place to say anything to her. She was not a child I assume????
If I were her I would not have defended myself to you in a nice way. I would have turned my head and rode on.

People are resonsible for themselves and we should not worry about what they do if it does not affect us directly.

btw...very few people where I live use hats at all. Not saying it is wise, just that I would be too busy telling a whole gaggle of people off to get any riding doen myself

Tremorfa - I did post that yes it was a "FREAK" accident with the hat so don't quite think I am like the drummer of Def Leppard. And also pointed out that hats are there to save your life. Whether I choose to wear a hat is here nor there, I ride at home on private land and don't ride on any roads, and what I choose to do at home is my business. If out on a road or in a public place you should at all times wear a hat even for the sake that your insurance will not cover you if you are not wearing one, it is not a good advert for our aspiring youth to get the wrong idea about riding and safety.

when you say no hats - do you mean bareheaded or riding with 'western' style hats ? as some form of headcovering does provide limited protection - at least more that totally bareheaded.

She is far more likely to cause the taxpayers this grief by driving to work in her car and getting into an accident. Should she stop driving?

We could go on and on with examples and I am not trying to be cheeky, but I just think it is up to the woman involved here and nobody elses concern.

I live in Wisconsin...very few people wear cowboy(western style) hats here

They do, but very rarely
I mean No hat at all. It is just the way it is here...right or wrong

I wear a hat for TREC compets (it's obligatory) but I've ridden 100's Km outside without (& fallen off a couple of times) on the sometimes lively James below.
For the occasional lesson involving jumping, I did wear a proper riding hat where it was sensible & you are most risk to collapse in a heap on the jumps.
