Food in the members has always been expensive but this morning's bacon roll beat all records. £3.80 for a dry roll containing two small rashers of bacon, the addition of half a tomato an extra £1.80, beware.

Do they prevent you from taking in your own food? My friend went to the Grand National, they were checking bags for food and she was only allowed to take in food for her baby

We are in the fast food business and whilst I fully agree the price is atrocious (we charge £2 for a bacon roll with 2 rashers of back bacon in a crusty baguette) what you don't realise is what the organisers charge for the 'pitch'. Local county show wanted the best part of £3k for the privilege.. with extra charges if we wanted to use electricity. Takes an awful lot of bacon rolls/burgers etc to recoup that sort of amount.

Sadly, as usual, it's the customer who pays for other peoples greed.

Indeed, many forget this. I'm not a food retailer but am well-aware of the price of the pitches. Then of course, theres the fuel to get you and your van there, wages and who knows what...

Yes but at Reading you can go off site and get cheap food in the town (Greggs is always a favourite!).

I understand that pitches are expensive. but that sounds very expensive for poor quality food. And lets face it, it was probably cheap bacon and bread too :(

£2 for half a tomato !!!! Day light robbery :(

It is expensive enough , and tomorrow even more so, my local event, which get all the top riders is only £5, for parking and entry, greed springs to mind!

£12 today and £21 tomorrow at burghley is disgusting

I do have to say that I dislike being told what food I can and cannot eat when out and about. What if you have special dietry requirements? A friend's son is allergic to absolutely loads, so she has to make his own bread because there is nothing on the market that suits him.

...what will they do, demand a doctors cert. to support your claim?

Wouldn't go anywhere that did this, that's awful, I never eat the food at shows these days. (not that I would go to the Grand National.)

Just going to watch W on Sunday, can't justify competing .

Have you seem the pics of mini doing her first x country course ? :)

Yes! I commented that it takes me back to when I took my son out every weekend we could, and every PC rally as well, loved it, those were the days!

TBH, I'd much prefer to do that now than take myself competing, but he's 'gone off' ponies....besides, he will soon be touching 6ft, cost a fortune in suitable mounts...:D

blimey, i've still got the image of that burger van blowing up at the National Pony Show at the weekend.......talking about horsey catering and all.....

To get back to original comment - the members is always expensive - the only good things there are the afternoon teas with a pot of tea and Pimms on Sunday afternoon watching the fly past. Priceless ;)

Fast food places are ALWAYS expensive at events and a lot of the time for reasons mentioned above.

That said in the food walk area you can get some really very lovely food (much better than your usual 'burger van' rubbish) for what I think are not bad prices for the quality. Also if you find any particular favourites that you would like to take home I found last year a lot of places were selling off lots of lovely goodies very cheap after the sj had finished.

Theres also nothing to stop you taking your own? I quite often freeze a mini lunch box of mixed fruit and take along my own Pimms - or even better if your a cheapskate like me - imitation Pimms called 'jeeves' from tesco, lovely stuff!

If you have a land rover key, go to their hospitality, show your key and get free food and drink, we do this every year at Burghley

They.also do free coffee & biccys for HSBC a/c holders at their stand opposite the discovery valley jump...well last year they did.

Trust me... NOTHING we sell is rubbish. Nor is our van a 'burger van' although we do sell burgers. We refuse to sell any form of processed food or anything with MSG added. Please don't tar everyone with the same brush.

I paid £3.80 for the most lovely bacon butty from Grasemere 4 rashers of bacon very fresh soft bap. Lovely lady if looked out some crispy bits for me. It was a little costly but it certainly was tasty.
