While out hacking today I pulled over into a dropped curb driveway to let the traffic safely pass, we were stood diagonal to the curb but well and truelly on it. A few cars past and then a van came out of no where and sped past (its a straight road and I had hi-viz on so he must have seen me) his wingmirror smacked my poor pony straight in the face! B*****d!!!!! Didnt even stop just carried on! Luckily my pony is pretty rock steady and apart from obviously jumping up and backwards when he was hit he then stood 'fairly' calmy while I checked him over. How DARE this person hit a pony (or anything for that manner) and not even stop! Its a road constantly used by horses, with signs stating that. Theres also a school on the road, what about if it had wiped out some children on the way to school???? Im so angry with myself that I didnt get a number plate, was more concerned about checking over my pony but for ******s sake why did I not get the number plate??!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Cannot believe this ignorant pig just drove away as though nothing happened, just hope my ponys fat head has at least cracked his wingmirror!

Rant over

(apologies for language if it offends anyone...although lanaguage at the time was a hell of alot worse)

He actually hit you? Report it to the police and give them as many details of the van as you can. There's also a BHS place to report traffic incidents I think too?

sorry, should add that I'm glad you and pony are unhurt and pony wasn't too disturbed by it!

Worth reporting ie colour type vehicle. It could be a driver that uses the road regularly. The spped merchants that come through our village are often local unfortunately.

Glad your horse is ok poor thing. Can understand your fury etc.

thank you. Im just so angry that they didnt even stop! Ill look on that BHS accident site and report it. Surely this sort of thing cant go being acceptable

That is disgusting - some people:(

I agree that you should report it, even though you did not get the registration

Your poor pony, hope he's ok. Definitely report it. I had someone hit my old horse across the back end with a wing mirror once. They didn't stop either! I carry a very bright schooling whip now!

Do report it to the police as well. If there are any cameras locally they may be able to identify the van. But also they can do a few drivebys of the area - if he behaves like this to an animal, you can bet your bottom dollar that it is a characteristic of more general behaviour in cars and he may well be caught for other motoring offences.

It really does make you feel sick that you didn't get the number plate doesn't it? I remember not getting the number of someone who could have killed me and Ned, I'm still cross at myself!!

Anyway, I'm horrified to hear what happened :O Poor pony! I'm glad he's ok. *Hugs*

Do report it to the BHS they have a map pinpointing all accidents. I did so a few months back, but like you, my daughter was so shocked! that she didn't get reg number so not a lot the Police can do, but again a white van hit our horse and she actually did a splat on the floor and her legs went under the van which luckily had stopped at this point but as soon as the horse got up, drove off! both horse and rider was ok thankfully, but has set the mare back she was only 5 months into being broken in, she now has a dislike of anything diesel sounding and of course vans, but she is a trusting little thing and getting much better now. horse and rider was vizzed up!

luckily we had about 4 white similar looking vans come past on the way back to the yard and he didnt bat an eyelid so hopefully he hasnt been too mentally scarred by the whole thing.

Poor pony. Definately report it.........I was once hit on the arm/shoulder when I was walking up a road, but a white van that was far too close to the kerb. It sent me flying, but thankfully didnt break anything........guy never stopped either.

Glad ur ok.

When I was younger me and some friends got off the bus to go to college, and as the bus drove forwards it smacked my mate in the back of the head. Heck of a bang too.

Shame you didnt get the number plate, I now have a habit of looking instantly at number plates after being hit down the side of my car by an old lady who then drove off oblivious to what had happenned. she crossed over the white line straight into me, I could do nothing.

 annoyed for you, give your pony an extra hug from me, poor sausage :(, I should still report it to the police so as to have it on record.

You never know, you may see that van around again and your memory will be jolted by the familiar(even if you can't remember it exactly) plate&appearance(&maybe the driver!) Had a close shave recently with a really ignorant c*w driving a white BMW with a private plate-I had a vague memory of the first part of the plate(she sped off round the blind bend) and whadda yknow, couple of weeks later,I was driving locally and saw her car parked up-I slowed down, took a pic on phone of car&plate&reported:) She had ignored my 3requests to wait behind us on a blind bend, until we could see round to wave her past(as we'd done for car that had been in front of her) and blasted past, giving me the V and mouthing 'F off' very nastily at me&then proceeded to miss horse in front of me by a whisker,as she swerved to avoid car that had been coming at us(innocently) round the bend. Some people are just beyond ignorant...if I ever see her on the street..grrrr!!

Ye poor things... I hate the way drivers think they own the road if anything horses should have rite away they after all were using the road first... I work in a trekking centre and we have to walk on the road for about 5 moin to get to our track. The amount of times i had to get off and stop drivers who were approaching to fast to slow down and all i get is "F off im in a hurry".. Horses are not like cars if you hit them its going to hurt them and the rider... drivers dont understand the faster you approach the harder it is to over take horses as they can frighten them where as if they approach slower giving the horse a chance to see them it is alot easier to pass out..
We had an incident a few months ago i was riding a great big clysdale who took up a big bit of the road a car came up fast behind.. there was no room on the road for him to over take us so i started to trot to the nearest gate way so he could pass.. but he was in such a hurry that he over took us on the little road. My horse ended knocking off the wing mirror and i scratched thes side of it with the stirrup iron and the car was rubbing off against him as he past.. he got and ate me alive and when i tried to explain he just curesed me out of it... When i got home I rang the Gards and they told me that he rang as well.. But there was nothing they could do they told him to slow done in future but i dont think that was enough.. So I know how you feel..
Hope your pony is ok and you and ye dint get to much of a fright

Glad your both ok, what a moron. Worth reporting to the police though, with any luck the moron had been through a nearby speed camera just before. And if I'd have been driving near by, I probably would have followed long enough to get his reg & report him. Know its a longshot but not impossible one of the other drivers did.

and if the van driver has broken the mirror and has a company van chances are he'll be blaming you and saying you didn't stop...
Eh, she was on a horse?

Definitely report it to the police - it's a legal requirement to stop if you hit a dog so would have thought it would mean horses as well.

Firstly im glad you both are ok, there was an incident in my area where a van wing mirror clipped the head of someone walking on the road who was killed, your horse is lucky he didnt sustain any facial fractures.
You would be wise to report it to the police .
