Hi all. Just looking for a bit of sympathy really. After everything poor Ron's been through, he's been sound and going brilliantly the last few months - including 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th at dressage with scores between 66 and 68% and I was even thinking about jumping him this winter. So I guess we were destined to have another problem as things were going a little too well.

Saturday morning he was hopping lame right fore - weight-bearing but only just. Vet out, who got a positive response to right fetlock flexion test, but nerve block indicated it's a foot problem. He's very, very lame turning, and starting moving, but gets better the longer he's trotted for. Vet back again tomorrow hopefully to see if any improvement (which I can't see as he's still shifting weight off that leg).

I spent Saturday and Sunday in a pit of utter despair. But, we've been through so much together and I've got to be strong for him again in the hope this new injury is either not major, or fixable. Please can everything think of him and send him healing thoughts! he so doesn't deserve this (despite the fact he was a bit of a d*ck for the vet - I think it's hard to tell if a horse is lame when it's only got one foot on the ground!). The vet described Ron as a "Formula 1" horse :D Hehehe. He is that. Ridiculously expensive, little use practically, and has to be constantly taken apart and put back together :D

(I'm not sure that's quite what the vet meant though!).

Hi B sorry to hear about Ronnie. Is he sure it is in the foot? could it be something relatively straightforward like an abscess? Bruised sole? I dont know about your fields, but our have been bone dry for ages so they have all been pounding about on very hard ground (almost like concrete) then suddenly we had some rain, and now it is dry again. A few on my yard have come down with abscesses.

What has the vet advised? box rest? or does he want him to go in for further tests?

Is he the same on hard ground and on a surface?

How gutting - I know what it is like to finally have a horse sound (well, as sound as it is going to get) and then it decides to break himself again. Just so frustrating and disheartening, but got to stay positive and hopefully this is something that can be resolved quickly.

sending 'vibes' to Ronnie and (((hugs))) to you :) I once had a formula 1 too - its not fun and no joke. I use to say she took the veterinary manual to bed at night and ordered something awful it happened time after time :(. Previous horse had nothing wrong with him in 15 years so it was a bit of a shock.

Hi M - I was praying it was bruising or an abscess - but the vet didn't think it was an abscess, and the jury's still out on bruising. I think we're going to go with Xrays and scans if he's not showing any signs of improvement this week. There's no heat or swelling, but a little tenderness in the back quarter of the hoof. I was wondering about corns but he's so very lame, I'm not sure they'd make him that lame. Vet thinks he may have "twanged" something in his foot. Time will tell I guess. Even bute isn't helping a great deal.

He's on box rest. Haven't tried him on a surface although can't imagine he'd be any different - he really is hopping lame, which is at it's worst when turning.

It is gutting isn't it? It always happens just when you start to plan ahead. I'd filled out my entry for our next dressage outing as he's becoming quite the dressage pony. I doomed us by doing that!

How are you and the horses? I really should PM you but I can't figure this new forum out.

Thanks Shirley, really appreciate the hugs! I think Ron does the same - he's going for a full house of injuries and ailments. Unfortunately my previous horse was frequently on the injury list so I don't know any different, but I do look on a little enviously at people with horses that don't get into so many scrapes!!

ahh, when are you taking him in then? Maybe its a sprain?

Is he rocking back on his heels or anything like that, trying to take the weight off front legs, or is he ok weight bearing, just not sound?

He was going so well it makes it all just so much worse! I said to D yesterday that he only had 1 leg left so he had better look after it (as he was busy scraping the ground and kicking the wall with it). Still, I could make up the set as he has had xrays of everything else.

Some people arejust destined to have broken horses with one thing after another. My last horse had a fairly large list of ailments, with not a lot of her left on the insursnce insured. When she died last year (completly unrelated to all her other problems.) my vet even joked that she hoped my other horse would not continue withgoing through veterinary a manual of problems but she has and so far not a single problem has been the same as my last horse!
I do hope Ronnies latest problem is easily sorted and he wil get back to his dresage soon.
Horses are just sent to try us and keep us poor

Hopefully they'll bring the scanning equipment out, but I guess we'll discuss this tomorrow.

He's not rocking back on his heels or looking laminitic - it's more of a keeps lifting the foot up in the air, pawing the air and even leaning forwards on it. I think it's the back of the foot that's hurting, judging by how he's standing.

Poor little man. It's the lamest I've ever seen him :(

Will PM you! Thanks :D

Hehe thanks! Now I've got two accident prone wallies! I feel much better :D Now you can have him back - while you're at it, do you want Ronnie too?????! :D

It is rubbish. I'm feeling sorry for myself and sorry for him. Was totally miserable on Sunday and fearing the worst, but am now being philosophical about it. Who knows, maybe it's just bruising and he's being THE biggest wuss on earth about it. He deserves a bit of good luck bless him.

How's the Archie-monster? And Coryn?

Thanks, really appreciate your thoughts. Hope your horse feels better soon! It must be so painful having a foot abcess - glad I'm not a horse.

So do I!! Like you feel sorry for him and myself as I've just had two week's off week hoping to catch up on the missed out riding due to saddle problems and now this!! He's doing ok walking around ok so it's going to be so long before Im riding again!! Im going to miss all the nice sunny weather good thing I prefer to ride when it's cooler!!!

Oh no I am so sorry to hear your news. I really hope it turns out to be something relatively simple after all. When we have horses like Ronnie & Rory it is so easy to think the worse case scenario at first. These boys eh, it's so sad they always keep having things go wrong. Send him big hugs from me & Rory just says get well (wouldn't do his street cred much good if he were sending hugs lol) Please keep us updated xx
